About AfriGenetry LinkAfriGenetry Link is a global nonprofit building the world's first community-centered African genomic health ecosystem, reconnecting people of African descent to their identity, heritage, and health through DNA education across the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, and Brazil. We have a powerful mission, a growing global team, active programs, and a founder story that belongs to the world. What we are missing is the strategic communications leadership to make that happen consistently. The Head of Communications and Marketing is the person who builds and executes the communications infrastructure that turns AGL's story into a movement.This is a leadership volunteer role. You are not just creating content. You are building a communications department from the ground up, managing a small team, setting strategy, and ensuring that every platform, every message, and every piece of content reflects the power and professionalism of what AGL is building.What will you ownOverall communications strategy, defining how AGL shows up across all platforms and audiences, including funders, partners, community members, students, and diaspora communitiesBrand management, ensuring consistency in AGL's voice, visual identity, and messaging across all channelsManaging and directing the Content and Social Media Lead, setting the weekly content calendar, reviewing content before it goes live, and coaching the team on storytelling qualityManaging and directing the SEO and Growth Lead — aligning blog and website content with organizational priorities and reviewing performance monthlyMedia and public relations, drafting and distributing press releases for major milestones, responding to media inquiries, and proactively pitching AGL's story to journalists and podcasters in the African diaspora, health equity, and genomics spaces.Website and content strategy — ensuring the website accurately reflects AGL's current programs and priorities and is updated regularlyNewsletter strategy — overseeing the monthly newsletter so it is compelling, on-brand, and delivered consistentlyEvent communications — managing all promotional materials, social media coverage, and post-event documentation for AGL's campus tour and community pop-up events in DallasFunder and partner communications support — reviewing all external-facing documents and emails for brand consistency and professional qualityWhat we are looking forProven experience in communications, marketing, or public relations; nonprofit, corporate, or agency background, all consideredStrong strategic thinking: you can build a communications plan, not just execute tasksExperience managing or mentoring a small teamExcellent writing skills: you can write everything from a press release to an Instagram caption and know the differenceUnderstanding of how to build an audience and grow engagement across digital platformsPassionate about African heritage, health equity, diaspora reconnection, or community healthHighly reliable — you deliver on time, communicate proactively, and lead by example.What you will gainThe opportunity to build a communications department for one of the most ambitious African health equity nonprofits in the worldDirect access to and mentorship from the founder, a PMP-certified public health professional and experienced project managerPortfolio of strategic communications work at a global nonprofit operating across four continentsA reference letter from the Executive Director upon successful completionFirst consideration for the paid Communications Director role as AGL secures fundingConnection to AGL's growing global network across Africa, the US, the Caribbean, and Brazil
