Career Site HeaderJob SummaryThe Technical Accounting Specialist supports the Accounting team in technical accounting analysis, implementation of new accounting standards, and acquisitions. This role assists in ensuring compliance with guidance issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board under United States generally accepted accounting principles and accounting pronouncements issued by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The Technical Accounting Specialist has the opportunity to build on technical accounting knowledge and problem-solving skills, supports training on accounting policies and procedures across teams, and collaborates with senior leadership to address complex accounting matters.Job DutiesProvides technical accounting support and guidance for complex business transactions such as quarterly long-lived impairment analyses, asset acquisitions/business combinations and lease accounting. (Essential)Works on special projects and evaluates the appropriate accounting treatment for various strategic initiatives and unique business situations. (Essential)Researches, interprets, and documents all new accounting standards to determine the accounting and financial reporting impact to the company. (Essential)Interacts with accounting consultants and external auditors on technical accounting matters to ensure agreement on appropriate accounting conclusions. (Essential)Builds and maintains relationships with key external parties including internal and external auditors. (Essential)Supports the preparation and review of financial statement disclosures.Identifies process improvements in the accounting process and plays a key role in current improvement initiatives.Prepares month-end journal entries and supporting documents to ensure accuracy.Assists senior management with addressing issues and/or questions related to the monthly financial operating results and provides analysis of actual versus budget variances.Performs ad hoc analysis to support the monthly management reporting process; develops and enforces internal controls over financial reporting.Other duties as assigned.RequirementsHigh School Diploma or GED (Required)Bachelor's Degree in Business, Accounting, or related field (Required)Master's Degree in Business, Accounting, or related field (Preferred)2 years in experience researching, concluding upon, and documenting accounting issues (Required)3 years in of public accounting or industry experience (Required)Strong knowledge of United States generally accepted accounting principlesExperience with International Financial Reporting StandardsExcellent analytical and communication skillsStrong organizational and problem-solving skillsAdvanced computer proficiency in Microsoft Word and ExcelMust have a valid driver's licenseRequired Certifications/Licensures:(Certified Public Accountant (CPA))BenefitsAt Sun Communities, you will be part of an industry-leading organization where you will be challenged, inspired, rewarded and transformed.
