Light Duty Operator - Roadway Cleaning & Asphalt Overlay Preparation - D&J Construction, Northeast Louisiana

Position Summary: The Light Duty Operator supports asphalt paving operations by cleaning and preparing roadways for overlay, performing light equipment operation, general labor, and CDL truck driving responsibilities. This role is critical to achieving clean, well-bonded, and safe paving surfaces and maintaining efficient crew operations.Key Responsibilities:Roadway Cleaning & PrepPerform surface preparation: blowing, sweeping, pressure washing, brooming, edging/trimming shoulders, and removing vegetation, dirt, and debris.Assist with tack application support (set up exclusion zones, help with hose management, spot clean overspray).Support milling cleanup and pre-pave inspections; mark out utilities/structures (manholes/valves) and protect them during paving.Install/maintain traffic control (cones, signs, barricades) and perform flagging following MUTCD/crew procedures.Equipment Operation (Light Duty)Safely operate and maintain skid steer, walk-behind/ride-on brooms/sweepers, plate/roller compactors, air compressors, power washers, walk-behind saws, and other small tools.Conduct daily pre-use inspections, basic maintenance (fluids, grease, cleaning), and report defects immediately.CDL Driving & SupportOperate water truck/tack support truck and other commercial vehicles as assigned (site transfers, water delivery for dust control/cleanup).Complete pre/post-trip inspections, maintain logs as applicable, and comply with FMCSA/DOT regulations.Load/unload materials and assist with tool/equipment mobilization.General LaborAssist the paving crew with handwork, raking, shoveling, joint prep, and site housekeeping.Set up and break down work zones; maintain a clean, organized staging area.Respond to changing site needs and directions from the foreman.Minimum QualificationsValid CDL Class B (or A) with Tanker endorsement (N) required.Hazmat (H/HM) endorsement preferred.Clean MVR meeting company standards.Ability to pass DOT physical and drug/alcohol testing (pre-employment and random).High school diploma or equivalent preferred.1+ year experience in paving/roadway maintenance/construction or similar environment preferred.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesWorking knowledge of roadway cleaning and overlay prep best practices.Safe operation of light equipment and hand tools.Familiar with traffic control/flagging procedures; MUTCD awareness a plus.Ability to follow verbal/written instructions and complete checklists and basic logs.Strong teamwork, reliability, and attention to detail; safety-first mindset.Physical DemandsFrequently lift, carry, push, and pull 50-75 lbs.Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb in/out of equipment throughout the shift.Tolerate outdoor conditions (heat, cold, dust, noise) and long hours as needed.Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for safe equipment operation and traffic awareness.Work EnvironmentField-based at active roadway construction sites with moving vehicles/equipment, uneven terrain, and variable weather.Schedule & TravelFull-time with frequent overtime; early mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends as project needs dictate.Travel between job sites with potential overnight stays.Compensation & BenefitsCompetitive hourly wage.Benefits package (medical, dental, vision), 401(k) with company match.Equal Employment Opportunity
