SerDes Characterization Engineer, Platforms
Overview
In this role you will perform electrical characterization and validation for high-speed SerDes interfaces in Google’s hardware lab. You’ll work with advanced test benches and automated frameworks to explore wide PVT conditions. You will triage measurement issues and support senior engineers with debugging, while maintaining and documenting test setups and results. You contribute to shaping the next generation of hardware powering Google services, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver reliable, high‑performance systems.

ResponsibilitiesExecute electrical characterization and validation plans for high-speed SerDes in the labOperate complex lab test benches (oscilloscopes, BERTs, temperature chambers, logic analyzers, precision power supplies)Run automated test frameworks performing parametric sweeps across voltage, temperature, and process corners (PVT)Triage measurement failures, perform basic root cause analysis, assist senior engineers with debuggingMaintain lab test setups, calibrate equipment, verify RF cable/fixture integrity, track hardware assetsSummarize and present structured measurement results and trend charts to the engineering team
Key requirementsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, related field, or equivalent practical experience2 years of experience in a hardware laboratory with high-speed test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, BERTs, or power supplies)Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) for test automation or data processingPreferred: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or related fieldPreferred: automated test execution and lab instrument communication protocols (SCPI, GPIB, Ethernet/USB)Preferred: familiarity with SerDes concepts (modulation, eye diagrams, jitter, BER) and basic signal integrity fundamentalsPreferred: strong collaboration, attention to detail, and willingness to learn advanced characterization methodologiesCollaborative mindsetEagerness to learn advanced characterization methodologiesMeticulous attention to measurement accuracy and documentationHigh-speed test instrumentation experience (oscilloscopes, BERTs, power supplies)Python scripting for test automation or data processingAutomated test execution and lab instrument communication protocols (SCPI, GPIB, Ethernet/USB)
