Civan Lasers develops high-power Dynamic Beam Lasers for advanced welding applications. As the company expands, this role will help customers successfully implement Civan's technology by developing innovative laser welding solutions and providing technical support throughout the application lifecycle.
*Position Summary*
The Application Engineer is a key member of the application engineering team and is responsible for developing, optimizing, validating, and supporting high-power laser welding applications for customers. This role serves as the primary technical interface between customers, sales, product development, and engineering teams, translating manufacturing challenges into robust laser welding solutions.
The position combines hands-on laboratory work, customer interaction, application development, technical support, and field activities including demonstrations, installations, commissioning, and process optimization.
*Key Responsibilities*
* Develop, optimize, and validate laser welding processes for customer applications across a wide range of materials, joint configurations, and manufacturing requirements.
* Work closely with customers to understand manufacturing challenges, application requirements, quality standards, and production objectives, translating them into practical laser welding solutions.
* Plan and execute application development projects including sample preparation, fixture design, process setup, welding trials, data collection, and documentation.
* Analyze welded samples using visual inspection, macro and micro cross-sections, metallurgical evaluation, mechanical testing, and other appropriate methods to evaluate weld quality and continuously improve processes.
* Prepare clear technical reports documenting welding procedures, trial results, observations, conclusions, and recommendations.
* Support customer demonstrations, proof-of-concept evaluations, feasibility studies, and process qualification activities within the application laboratory.
* Provide technical support to customers by answering application questions, discussing process feasibility, troubleshooting welding challenges, and recommending process improvements.
* Travel to customer facilities to support application development, laser installations, commissioning, production startup, technical service, and troubleshooting activities.
* Assist the Service Engineering team with customer support, field service activities, and production issue resolution as needed.
* Collaborate closely with Product Management, R&D, Sales, Service, and Engineering teams to provide customer feedback and contribute to future product improvements.
* Share application knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices with Civan's global application engineering teams to promote consistency and continuous improvement.
* Represent Civan Lasers at conferences, webinars, trade shows, customer meetings, and technical presentations.
* Maintain active participation in welding organizations, industry societies, and technical committees to stay current with emerging technologies, standards, and best practices.
*Required Qualifications*
* Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
* Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in welding engineering, manufacturing engineering, application engineering, or process development.
* Strong understanding of welding processes, welding metallurgy, weld quality requirements, and process development methodologies.
* Ability to understand customer manufacturing requirements and develop practical laser welding solutions.
* Experience evaluating welded samples and using testing results to improve manufacturing processes.
* Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
* Ability to work effectively in both hands-on laboratory and customer-facing environments.
* Willingness and ability to travel throughout North America to support customer projects, demonstrations, installations, and technical service.
*Preferred Qualifications*
* Experience supporting industrial customer applications or manufacturing process development.
* Experience working within an application laboratory or technical service organization.
* Experience in heavy fabrication industries including shipbuilding, structural steel, pressure vessels, energy, or defense.
* Knowledge of metallurgical analysis, welding qualification testing, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
* Comfortable presenting technical information to customers, industry organizations, and cross-functional teams.
Pay: $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
