Founded in 1941, Archbold is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to science, conservation, and education.Position Overview The Avian Ecology Program at Archbold Biological Station is hiring a Research Assistant to support and help lead long‐term research on the federally threatened Florida Scrub‐Jay across the Lake Wales Ridge landscape. Reporting to Dr. Sahas Barve, this is a leadership role responsible for coordinating field operations, managing data, and contributing to research and public engagement. This position is ideal for someone with strong field experience, bird banding expertise, and the ability to lead a team while advancing conservation research.Key ResponsibilitiesCoordinate and manage daily field operations for long‐term researchTrain, supervise, and co‐mentor interns and research staffLead hiring processes, including recruitment, interviews, and reference checksOversee data collection, entry, QA/QC, and seasonal database management (Microsoft Access preferred)Conduct fieldwork including banding, nest monitoring, behavioral observations, and habitat surveysCollaborate on off‐site projects (e.g., surveys, mapping, and technical reporting)Maintain field equipment and research suppliesContribute to outreach through public talks, camps, and eventsParticipate in scientific writing, analysis, and independent research as appropriateField Work IncludesMonitoring color‐banded populations and re‐sighting individualsCapturing and banding birdsNest searching and monitoringBlood sample collection and processingTerritory mapping and annual surveysOperating ATVs and 4WD vehicles in rugged terrainRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree or equivalent scientific field experienceMinimum ~4 field seasons in avian ecology or similar workExperience banding passerines or similar speciesProject management and team leadership experienceExperience mentoring or training othersAbility to work independently in remote field conditionsValid driver's license and ability to operate ATVs and 4WD vehiclesWillingness to commit to a minimum tenure of 3–5 years strongly preferredMust be authorized to work in the United StatesAdditional Skills & ExperienceAbility to interpret bird behavior and locate nestsExperience navigating with map, compass, and GPSStrong organizational skills and attention to detailExperience managing and QA/QC‐ing datasetsAbility to communicate scientific concepts to public audiencesMotivation to work and live in a rural field station environmentFull‐time (40 hours/week; field and office work)Starting at $23/hour (commensurate with experience)Benefits include medical, dental, vision, PTO, and holidaysStation vehicles provided for research activitiesHousing not providedThis role involves extensive outdoor fieldwork in Florida conditions, including heat, humidity, uneven terrain, and biting insects. Early mornings and some weekend work (March–June breeding season) are required. Starting at $23/hour (commensurate with experience). Benefits include medical, dental, vision, PTO, and holidays. Station vehicles provided for research activities.
