The Center for Information Technology (CIT) at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Application Developer. The Center for Information Technology is the central provider of technology and a key strategic partner on all digital-related initiatives at the College, including enterprise infrastructure, applications, educational technology, information security, telecommunication services, and end-user and systems support. The successful candidate will join the College at a time of significant positive change. This is a full-time, 12-month continuing Administrative and Professional (A&PS) staff position, reporting to the Director of Enterprise Applications. The Application Developer is a member of the Enterprise Applications team. Responsibilities This role serves functional areas and assists subject matter experts with ensuring data integrity, testing of system changes, and analyzing data flows for data management improvement opportunities and client support. The role also assists with system upgrades, patches, testing and other technical projects as assigned and serves as a backup for daily operations, administration, and maintenance of the ERP system. Applies advanced business analysis concepts to identify, evaluate and define complex systems scope and objectives based on advanced knowledge of applicable business practices, processes and systems and industry standards to meet end-user needs. Works at the highest technical level of various phases of systems analysis. Considers the business implications of applying technology to the current and future business environment. Provide technical support for the College’s Third-party systems and the ERP system as needed. Develop practical reporting tools for the business departments. Carry out complex and multi-level tasks from start to finish. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Essential Job Functions Planning & Analysis Consult with colleagues and current or new business processes to determine how our enterprise can support and improve these processes. Perform research, analyze technology, consult vendors and other higher ed institutions, and apply best practices to design technical solutions. Evaluate potential risks to the service and applications, develop mitigation plans and recommendations, and facilitate decisions. Operational Support Respond to and resolve incidents reported by end users regarding our Enterprise Applications utilizing critical thinking skills. Provide monitoring and management of our Enterprise Applications and manage issues and communications where appropriate. Create and maintain documentation related to services, solutions, and interfaces. Provide training, documentation, and communication for major projects or releases. Consulting Provide consulting to end users on best practices. Study and develop a comprehensive understanding of a subset of our enterprise applications. Engage with campus partners to determine if the enterprise software is a candidate for the proposed solution, considering the option of other platforms that may reduce long-term costs and duplication. Lifecycle Management Plan, review, coordinate, and manage annual and/or more frequent upgrades and maintenance projects for a subset of enterprise applications and communicate with and support campus partners during this time. Engage regularly with vendors to align to their release and product roadmaps and manage the vendor relationship to ensure continuous support is maintained. Validate, test and implement new products/applications, modules/features within an application, application releases and services. Serve as the central point for review and recommendation of support contract renewals. Essential Personnel This position may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times. Application Programmer leads, coordinates and works collaboratively with other IT professionals to provide a stable and robust set of data management and application services to campus. This includes, but is not limited to: database, middleware, systems and network administrators; application systems analysts and developers; data integration specialists; business intelligence and analytics specialists; cloud specialists; data architects. This position works closely with IT professionals to analyze, troubleshoot, integrate, and tune applications, with a focus on the underlying databases and data structures. The position is expected to evolve with technological changes and shifts in data management paradigms. The technology systems it will manage may be located on-site, in one or more cloud locations, or in a combination of on-site and cloud locations. The incumbent may be part of an on-call rotation and may be expected to work on some weekends. Hybrid work model that combines remote and in-office work. Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, plus four years of relevant experience in business process and data analysis, or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience. Minimum of 3 years of ERP experience. Proficiency in SQL, PL/SQL, and database concepts. Experience with APIs for ETL processes and web service integrations, including RESTful and SOAP APIs. Familiarity with data mapping, transformation, and manipulation to ensure system compatibility. Knowledge of data formats (XML, JSON, CSV) and scripting tools like XSLT and JSON for data transformation. Effective communication skills to work with stakeholders, including business users, IT teams, and vendors. Ability to translate technical concepts into non-technical language. Patience, professionalism, tactfulness, and empathy. Enthusiasm for helping others and assessing customer needs. Ability to work independently and proactively, managing competing projects and deadlines. Attention to detail and thoroughness in testing integrations for accuracy, data integrity, and regulatory compliance. Willingness to document integration processes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps. Willingness to stay updated with ERP features and emerging integration technologies. Ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving technical environment and support change. Desired Qualifications Prior experience in a higher education environment. 3 or more years of technical expertise with Ellucian Banner, OnBase, Anthology Reach or similar enterprise applications. Continuous learning mindset to stay up to date with new technology. Business acumen coupled with technical knowledge. Demonstrated team-oriented work style, flexibility, and a strong service orientation. Ability to work independently and proactively. Ability to lead and work in a team environment and collaborate with other departments and external vendors. Demonstrated understanding of client relationship management, process mapping and improvement, project management, and production support.
