The assistant coach will collaborate with the Head Coach to create practice plans and team development strategies; run and control team drills alone without assistance; and achieve the enhancement of team skill performance. This position averages 10-15 hours a week and requires availability during the fall and spring seasons for mornings, evenings, and weekend travel.The Rugby Assistant Coach is responsible for the enforcement of rules, policies, and procedures as outlined in the Sport Club Handbook as well as all duties associated with coaching a collegiate competitive club program. The successful candidate will be expected to enforce and comply with all policies and procedures established by Associated Students/SDSU, the Sport Club Program, and USA Rugby while serving as a positive role model for the program and SDSU.Primary FunctionsESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESComplies with all job expectations as outlined in the Associated Students/SDSU Sport Club Coaching AgreementAssists with the development and implementation of daily training schemes to include: strength and conditioning; film and chalk talk reviews; technical skill development, and tactical strategy implementation.Oversees player recruitment and selection process Assists with the coordination of team practices, training, competition, and travel scheduleEnsures individual and program compliance with all policies and procedures of Associated Students/SDSU and Aztec RecreationEnsure safety of all team members, coaches and equipment is the top priority at all times Ensure scheduled practices begin and end on timeAssists team members in achieving recruiting goalsCollaborates with coaches from other programs to coordinate scrimmages and competitionsSubmit tournament entries Assists team members in achieving fundraising goalsAssists with the necessary equipment maintenance and repairsWorks collaboratively with team officers and administrators to develop and achieve program priorities Maintains team's positive community standing Assists in the outreach to alumni to recruit support for the teamRepresents the team in regional or national meetings with other coaches or organizationsReports any policy violations to supervisor immediatelyPerforms other duties as assignedCustomer Service and CollaborationEstablishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departmentsRepresents the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all timesMaintains positive and effective working relationships with all athletes and staffSafetyEnsures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policiesAdheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe PracticesReports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisorReports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediatelyQualificationsMinimum & Preferred RequirementsEducationBachelor's Degree preferredExperienceProficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies requiredKnowledge Microsoft applications and Aztec Recreation website requiredKnowledge and/or participation of Aztec Recreation programs and facilities preferredLicense & CertificationAmerican Red Cross First AID and CPR/AED certifications required Valid California Drivers' License and proof of automobile insurance are requiredTrainingsComputer Security, Gender Awareness, Sexual Harassment and Workplace Violence Prevention trainings within 30 days of hireMust complete a Defensive Driving CourseAttend all mandatory Aztec Recreation/Sport Club Staff meetings and trainings as directedPERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSMust be able to work with confidential items and understand the importance of confidentiality in project workMust be capable of maintaining positive working relationships with staff and athletesMust be able to exercise tact and exhibit sound professional judgmentMust be able to work well with different work stylesStrong organizational skills requiredMust be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completionCommitment to adhere to all the policies, rules, and regulations of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation and sport leaguesKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesDemonstrated commitment to student success and ability to recruit, train, and evaluate collegiate student athletesHave a strong coaching background with an emphasis on skill development and leadershipExcellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student athletes, team officers, coaches, administrators and alumniExcellent written and oral communication skillsAbility to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expectedSCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONSThis is apart-time hourly position.
