This position is part of theteam that provides services necessary for human health, economic stability, and overall societalwell-being. At the core of the mission of providing these services includes commitment to providingexcellent customer service to our citizens, business partners, regulatory agencies, and other county divisions.MAJOR FUNCTIONThese positions perform highly skilled work in industrial maintenance, troubleshooting and repairwork in water production facilities, wastewater facilities, and lift stations. Responsibilitiesinclude preventative and corrective maintenance, repair, diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanicalequipment. These positions most also have general theory and understanding of industrialinstrumentation and electrical controls. The role also involves performing physical labor tosupport facility and system upkeep. Employees may be assigned to specific water or wastewater sitesfor extended periods to gain practical experience and knowledge toward meeting the Department ofEnvironmental Protection (DEP) certification or licensing requirements. This position plays a key role in ensuring the reliability of essential utility services, regulatory compliance, environmental stewardship, and public health and safety.ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES* Inspects and observes the plants, lift stations and other Public Utilities equipment assigned ona daily basis; checks and evaluates equipment for leaks, excess fluids, and other potential repairor maintenance concerns; addresses concerns and performs necessary mechanical work to ensurefunctionality.* Changes oil, inspects equipment, replaces belts, and greases equipment; exercises and rotatesequipment for even usage; monitors and records all maintenance and repair activities.* Performs inspections and operational efficiency checks; conducts preventative maintenance serviceon a variety of mechanical and electrical components, pumps and supportive equipment andmachinery.* Repairs, troubleshoots, and replaces pumps, motors, actuators, gearboxes, pulleys, chemicallines, bar screens, clarifiers, screw lifts, vertical high-speed stage pumps, and other equipment;fabricates and prepares equipment to be installed or removed.* Works, engages, and assists electricians and other technicians on various installationactivities; participates in the installation of motors, meters, soft starts, and Variable FrequencyDrives (VFDs); works with facility operations staff to ensure compliance with industry standards andall regulations.* Installs and pulls water well pumps and motors; performs lift station back-flushing, andreplaces, repairs, and checks pumps and valves; pulls transducer, floats, and check valves at liftstations; cleans and pumps down wet well to inspect riser, shoes, rails, and pumps.* Mows lawns, operates weed eater, and uses pressure wash to clean and maintain lift stations,water wells, and surrounding areas; paints and places posts around stations as needed.* Attends and participates in safety, equipment, and plant training; obtains vendor quotes toassist in ordering supplies, equipment and parts; works with contractors and other departments;cross trains with various other technicians and departments.* Maintains records of service and maintenance for all booster stations, lift station facilities,mains, and plant mechanical and electrical equipment.* Performs other duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLSTools, methods, theories, materials, and practices of the mechanical tradeTheories and practices of the electrical tradeUtilities system operationsOperation of various types of pumps and of hydraulic, pneumatic and electro- mechanical equipmentRecord keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and recordsGeneral office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipmentEquipment maintenance practices and methodsUnderstanding and following oral and written instructionsDetecting defects in electrical or mechanical equipmentReading and understanding blueprints, rough sketches, and material estimatesReading and following instructions and procedures in equipment service and repairPerforming the heavy mechanical service and repair work in adverse conditionsAdhering to County and department rules, regulations, and policiesHave the ability to participate in the system reliability departments on-call rotationLift, carry, and manipulate equipment and materials weighing over 75 pounds.Independently ambulate, drive, climb, bend, stoop, sit, and stand as required by job tasksLearn/Use safety and occupational hazards precautions.Have the ability to obtain a Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician Certification(CMRT)* Have the ability to obtain Florida Wastewater Collections Certification "C", "B", "A"MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS* Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.* Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license within30 days of employment.Operator I- Paygrade 14* Entry Level position, limited experienceOperator II - Paygrade 16* 1 year experience (2,080 hrs.) and Florida Wastewater Collection "C" CertificationOperator III - Paygrade 18* 3 year's experience (6,240 hrs.) and Florida Wastewater Collection "B" CertificationOperator IV - Paygrade 20* 5 year's experience (10,400 hrs.) and Florida Wastewater Collections "A" CertificationOperator V (Dual Certification/License)- Paygrade 22* 5 year's experience (10,400 hrs.) Florida Wastewater Collections "A" Certification required,Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician Certification (CMRT), Associate CertifiedElectronics Technician (CETA) or equivalent certification, Municipal Board of Examiners Inc. ofPolk County (Polk MBOE) Journeyman Electrical License, Florida Department of Highway Safety andMotor Vehicles (FLHSMV) CDL "B or "A" license, and/or Florida Department of EnvironmentalProtection (FDEP) Water treatment, Wastewater level, Distribution treatment license accepted.A comparable amount of related training or experience may be substituted for the minimumqualifications except for licensing and certifications.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS* Standby and on call rotation are required for general and emergency work in thisclassification.All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency,employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of theirposition, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
