Lead Food Service WorkerThe Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) located at the Asheville, NC, VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time Lead Food Service Worker to provide quality service to our nation's veterans.Major Duties and Responsibilities:The Lead Food Service Worker has responsibility for control of food service operations and preparation of food in the Canteen Service under the general instructions of the Canteen Chief.Responsibilities include:Ordering food and suppliesLearning to cover all the different stations as needed to endure a smooth-running department and cover breaks when neededKeeping food storage areas clean and organized per sanitation standardsReceiving/inventorying/ordering food orders and putting them away timely per VCS standardsWorking with staff to ensure all sanitation standards are met and documented properly daily on production sheets and other logs per VCS sanitation standardsAbility to lead FSW staff with enthusiasm and great customer serviceWill be subjected to hot and cold temperatures.VCS offers competitive benefits, including:Child Care Subsidy ProgramPublic Transportation Benefits (Bus Pass)Annual Cost of Living Pay IncreasesMajor Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance & Life InsuranceVacation & Sick Leave to include 11 (paid) Federal HolidaysCompany Contribution to Retirement Savings PlanRequirements:Excellent customer service skillsServSafe CertificationPortion control and inventory managementBasic computer, mathematical, technical skillsMinimum of one (1) year experience in a cafeteria and/or fast-food environmentWorking knowledge of, and experience with, food service procedures/standards, equipment, and ability to train lower graded workers.Knowledge and experience of proper food handling, sanitation principles, proper dating/FIFO, and temperature monitoring to safeguard food against spoilage and waste.Ability to organize daily tasksAbility to develop and train in a mentor capacity.Requires constant standing, walking, and frequent bending.Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
