Weekend Shelter Medicine Veterinarian

PAWS Chicago is seeking a compassionate, mission-driven Shelter Medicine Veterinarian to join our team in a part-time weekend capacity. This role focuses on providing high-quality medical care to animals in our shelter and foster populations, ensuring continuity of care across the full seven-day week. Weekend coverage is a critical component of our medical operations, and we welcome applicants who can commit to one or both weekend days. Key Responsibilities Perform physical exams for shelter and foster populations Administer core and risk-based vaccinations for shelter dogs and cats Diagnose and treat medical conditions with a focus on population health and individual welfare Develop diagnostic and treatment plans for common and complex infectious diseases Conduct medical rounds and collaborate with veterinary technicians and animal care staff Provide emergency and intensive patient care as needed Perform minor or sedated procedures (e.g., wound care, laceration repair) Coordinate with the Spay/Neuter Clinic team for any advanced procedures (enucleation, amputations, etc.) Collaborate with the Director of Shelter Medicine and Head of Medical Operations to support medical decision-making and advance care protocols Requirements Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with a valid license to practice in Illinois Availability to work Saturday, Sunday, or both (minimum one weekend day per week; flexibility to cover both days preferred) Shift hours are 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; some flexibility available based on operational need Minimum of one year of experience in shelter medicine Knowledge of and commitment to progressive animal welfare practices and the No Kill philosophy Strong ability to multitask in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining high standards of care Physical Requirements Climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting and grasping Walking and moving about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another Able to lift 25lbs occasionally, 10lbs frequently and a negligible amount constantly PAWS Chicago Values-in-Action Respect: For every life, human and animal.
