Senior Traffic Engineer
Position SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Senior Traffic / Transportation Engineer to lead and support the planning, analysis, and design of transportation systems and traffic engineering projects. This role involves managing complex assignments, mentoring junior staff, and collaborating with public agencies and multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions.Key ResponsibilitiesLead traffic and transportation engineering studies, including traffic impact analyses (TIA), corridor studies, and safety evaluationsDesign traffic control devices and systems (signals, signage, pavement markings, ITS elements)Perform traffic operations analysis using tools such as Synchro, HCS, VISSIM, or similar softwareDevelop traffic signal timing plans, phasing, and coordination strategiesConduct intersection and roadway capacity analyses in accordance with industry standards (e.g., HCM)Prepare technical reports, construction documents, specifications, and cost estimatesManage project tasks, schedules, budgets, and client communicationsCoordinate with state and local agencies, including DOTs and municipalitiesSupport or lead public meetings, presentations, and stakeholder engagement effortsMentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and staffEnsure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and design standardsQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or related fieldProfessional Engineer (PE) license required7–12+ years of relevant traffic/transportation engineering experienceStrong knowledge of traffic engineering principles, roadway design, and transportation planningExperience with traffic analysis and simulation software (Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, SIDRA, etc.)Familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO, and local/state DOT standardsProficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and/or MicroStation preferredExcellent written and verbal communication skillsPreferred QualificationsPTOE (Professional Traffic Operations Engineer) certificationExperience managing projects and client relationshipsBackground in multimodal transportation (pedestrian, bicycle, transit) designExperience with grant applications, funding programs, or long-range transportation planning
