Job Description Thoracic Surgery Physician Assistant Location: Palmetto General Hospital – Miami-Dade County, FL Department: Thoracic Surgery Schedule: Full-time (daytime with call rotation) Position Overview Palmetto General Hospital is seeking a Thoracic Surgery Physician Assistant (PA) to join our growing surgical services team. This role supports board-certified thoracic surgeons in the comprehensive care of patients with complex thoracic conditions, including disorders of the lungs, chest wall, esophagus, and mediastinum. The Thoracic Surgery PA will provide continuity of care across the perioperative spectrum, participating in pre-operative evaluations, first assisting in the operating room as needed, and managing post-operative and inpatient care in collaboration with the surgical and multidisciplinary care teams. This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced hospital environment with access to advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic procedures. Essential Responsibilities Clinical & Surgical Support Perform comprehensive pre-operative assessments, histories, and physical examinations Assist in thoracic surgical procedures as a first assist, including minimally invasive (VATS) and robotic surgeries, when credentialed Manage surgical wounds, chest tubes, drains, and lines Provide bedside procedures within scope of practice Inpatient & Post-Operative Care Conduct daily patient rounds in the ICU and medical-surgical units Monitor post-operative recovery and manage complications such as air leaks, infections, bleeding, and respiratory issues Write and manage orders, progress notes, discharge summaries, and clinical documentation in the electronic medical record Coordinate discharges and transitions of care Outpatient Care Conduct post-operative follow-up visits and patient education Order and interpret diagnostic tests and imaging Collaborate with nursing, respiratory therapy, oncology, pulmonology, and other specialties Qualifications Required Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program Current Florida PA license or ability to obtain prior to start National certification by NCCPA Current BLS and ACLS certification Strong clinical, organizational, and communication skills Preferred Prior experience in thoracic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, ICU, or critical care First-assist experience in the operating room Familiarity with VATS or robotic-assisted thoracic procedures What Palmetto General Hospital Offers Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package Collaborative physician-led care model Opportunity to work with advanced surgical technologies Supportive leadership and professional development opportunities A mission-driven organization committed to high-quality patient care in the South Florida community Compensation & Benefits Top-tier, highly competitive compensation, with experience and qualifications.
