Position Title Linux Systems Management Engineer Purpose East Tennessee client Information Technology Services Division invites applications for the position of Linux Systems Management Engineer in the Client Technologies Team. This position acts as a platform owner for Linux and works to ensure user satisfaction among the Linux community across client community. Responsible for the full life cycle of devices; including deployment, on-going management, and user documentation, this position requires a deep understanding of the Linux operating system as well as an ability to work closely with people in and outside of IT. As the final point of escalation, this position sets the tone on the implementation of policy and works to build buy-in from stakeholders. We are looking for a technology leader who can understand the clients mission and the role Linux plays in that mission. Major Duties/Responsibilities Streamline processes surrounding the lifecycle of computer systems, including improvements in acquisition, configuration and deployment of new systems, daily operations and maintenance, monitoring, automated/proactive support, services, and retirement. Assist with the highest level of troubleshooting as needed, working with manufacturers, vendors, support staff, and customers. Create and maintain internal operating procedures and end user documentation. Contribute to the overall management of cyber security risks and implementation of tools to support clients mission. Provide centralized client management solution for Linux workstations and servers. Create installation packages for automated deployment of software applications and updates for desktop Linux platforms. Act as a subject matter expert for policy discussions and assist internal and external groups with Linux management related projects. Function as a liaison between the Linux user community and the IT organization. Maintain a dialog with the Linux user community through blog posts and mass email as well as other systems to ensure buy-in and facilitate collaboration. Required Qualifications Practical experience in the installation, configuration, and management of desktop Linux solutions, including Red Hat and Ubuntu. Strong understanding of configuration management in a large heterogeneous environment. Strong scripting ability (perl, python, shell, etc.) Practical experience with installer package creation (RPM and DEB) and package scripts. Practical experience with Linux deployment automation. Knowledge of OS and application security. Knowledge of networking services such as DNS and DHCP. Experience with task automation. Strong written and oral communication skills in English. U.S. Citizenship is required, and the ability to obtain Department of Energy security clearance is preferred. The ability to work occasional extended and weekend hours to resolve urgent problems or meet critical milestones as required. Desired technical qualifications include: Experience with CFEngine or other Linux configuration management systems (Puppet, Ansible, Chef, etc.). Experience with LUKS, run levels, GRUB, the init system, and other parts of the Linux boot process. Experience with software update regression testing. Experience with application virtualization software and approaches. Experience with SQL database queries, particularly for data analysis is desired. Web Server configuration experience (Apache and Tomcat). Experience with SSH as well as graphical network access. Experience with configuration and management of remote storage resources, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, SMB, and NFS. Application programming skills. Behaviors and traits required for success Must be able to demonstrate a scientific approach to evaluations, testing, troubleshooting and solution design. An understanding and practical experience in an operational IT organization, with experience in robust testing and change control procedures. Willingness to evaluate processes and procedures and suggest constructive paths for improvement in business and technical processes. Ability to work both independently and as a strong team contributor. Strong customer relationship skills and willingness to successfully lead customers through challenging projects. Willingness to follow up with end users and support staff concerning issues. Must stay current with new technologies, hardware and software and the latest security threats. Strong commitment to ethical and professional values. Maintains compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards. Experience Experience working in a science or technology environment is highly desired. Experience providing direct technical assistance to users and support staff. Proven 5+ years managing Linux systems.
