Job Description & Requirements Specialty: Labor and Delivery Discipline: RN Start Date: 04/14/2026 Duration: 13 weeks 36 hours per week Shift: 12 hours, nights Employment Type: Travel Assignment Overview Shift: Nights, 3x12hrs Hours: 36 hrs/wk Start Date: Apr 14, 2026 Length: 13 weeks Openings: 1 Description American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery position in a Family Birthing Center, requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience and multiple OB-specific certifications for a 13-week night shift contract in California. Details Acute care hospital setting within a Family Birthing Center, covering L&D and Mother-Baby (MB) units L&D unit has 4 beds; MB unit has 8 beds Patient population includes standard L&D (term and preterm), couplets, general GYN patients, and newborns requiring IV antibiotics and/or short-term O2 — no high-risk OB; mothers 34 weeks and below are transferred out Staffing ratios: L&D 1:2, 1:1 for active delivery; MB 1:4 (couplets) Unit averages approximately 45 deliveries per month Each delivery is attended by 2 RNs and 1 RT EMR: Cerner (experience required) 12-hour night shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM Every other weekend required (Fri, Sat, Sun for nights) First to float — floating responsibility is between L&D and MB only Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance with no self-scheduling; travelers may mark availability for extra shifts and arrange trades with other staff Charge nurse is generally non-patient-carrying but provides break relief; no nurse aides on unit RT available 24/7; OB and Anesthesia are on-call overnight; Hospitalist/Intensivist present during the day Pharmacy hours are 6:30 AM – 10:00 PM, with on-call pharmacist and remote pharmacy for deliveries after hours Requirements Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted Required certifications (all must be active; pending not accepted): BLS (AHA), ACLS, NRP, STABLE, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM) Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required BSN not required Cerner EMR experience required Must be able to work independently and perform confidently in emergency situations Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked (must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire) Valid driver's license required Additional Information Provide nursing care across L&D and Mother-Baby settings, including support during deliveries and postpartum couplet care Floor orientation consists of 2–3 days with a preceptor; facility-wide orientation takes place in Sacramento (not on-site) Candidates must pass a Relias Dysrhythmia exam before an offer can be confirmed A pass/fail skills test on sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes is administered on the first day of orientation Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's); holiday time-off requests will be considered but are not guaranteed Scrubs are provided by the facility Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered Bedside report is standard practice on this unit The nearest sister hospital is approximately 1 hour away — candidates should be comfortable working with limited overnight resources American Traveler Job ID P-688179.
