After School Classroom Lead - Elementary
As an After School Classroom Lead at Portland Tennis and Education (“PT&E”), you will have the opportunity to lead a group of students (referred to as “Scholar Athletes”) in grades 2 and 3 in support of accomplishing academic goals, meeting character development milestones, and engaging in fun, thoughtfully planned tennis, wellness, life-skill, and community-based activities.
The After School Classroom Lead serves as an inspiring role model to Scholar Athletes, demonstrating a growth-oriented mindset, planning and leading meaningful educational and enrichment activities, monitoring and enabling student progress, and enthusiastically encouraging and enabling program participation and positive growth.
During the school year, approximate hours are 10:45am - 6:15pm Monday through Thursday for a total of ~28 hours / week. The schedule will shift for our Summer programming Monday through Thursday 8am-4pm (June 10-August 13) for a total of ~32 hours / week.
It is important for the children to have consistency in their classroom, therefore for this role, we ask for a commitment through the end of the 2026-2027 school year, which finishes in June 2027.
Job Description
1. Academic and Enrichment Support:
Plan and facilitate daily activities, including:
Homework completion
Academic lessons in small groups or full-class sessions, following the team-wide model of which curriculum areas are covered on which days to maintain consistency
Utilization of pre-planned curriculum
Life skills and character development activities aligned with PT&E values and to support and celebrate individual identities (e.g., team-building exercises, self-discovery activities)
Ensure student safety and promote a multicultural, positive learning environment.
Monitor and reinforce appropriate individual and group behavior according to program expectations.
Work with partnering schools to ensure academic lessons are on-par with current subjects and are age appropriate.
Develop strong relationships with students, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity.
2. Student Support and Progress:
Identify students requiring academic, behavioral, or mental health interventions.
Administer pre and post assessments to track progress and identify student needs related to academics, socioemotional learning, etc.
Collaborate with Instructional Specialists and Youth and Family Advocates to develop and implement appropriate support plans.
Develop and track individual success plans using template for students with acute needs.
Apply interventions in the classroom to enhance student success.
Monitor student attendance, implementing the 3-step attendance framework as needed.
3. Classroom and Activity Management:
Ensure the classroom is clean, organized, and ready for student activities.
Use templates to plan lessons, submit supply requests, and track program progress.
Supervise support staff and volunteers, ensuring alignment with program plans.
Assist students during their scheduled tennis and pickleball sessions on the court.
Partner with on-court staff to maintain consistent expectations for student behavior and participation.
4. Individual Family Meetings (as needed):
Build positive relationships with families during student pick-up times.
Initiate and facilitate family meetings to address gaps in academic progress, participation, or attendance expectations, with support from Program Director as needed.
Monitor individual family messages through email and Procare app, replying in a timely manner.
Send out weekly or bi-weekly updates through Procare to inform families of classroom activities.
Participate in planned family events such as Todos Tenis & Meet the Coaches Night.
The ideal candidate must have:
At least one year of experience working with grade school age students
Ability to connect with students on an individual level while also creating a welcoming classroom environment
Classroom management skills
Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds
Spanish language skills
Proficiency in Google Suite
Availability for an afternoon schedule until June 2026
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: 28 – 32 per week
