In 2022 and 2024 MI United / MI United Action was the source of the largest voter contact program not affiliated with organized labor or a political party. This winter we will use the same methodology to effect change by collecting signatures door to door for our petition program in Flint and Detroit.Overview of Responsibilities As a Petition Canvasser, your responsibilities will consist of executing our petition canvassing program by using door to door canvassing tactics.Under the mentorship and supervision of Michigan United staff, Petition Canvassers will be tasked with conducting extensive outreach (primarily through door to door conversations) into the community to collect signatures for Michigan United Action's petition program.Canvassers will also identify potential supporters for Michigan United's key campaigns.Your typical week responsibilities could look similar to this:Roughly 25 - 30 hours / week spent doing direct voter contact and 10-15 hours / week training, launching and debriefingParticipating in a daily stand up meeting with the canvassing team to receive daily instructions and updatesPreparing and organizing your materials for daily canvassingCompleting the canvassing of your daily list and properly collecting signatures from registered votersEnsuring canvass data/signature integrityDebriefing daily with the canvassing teamThe above responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.QualificationsA commitment to MI United Action's theory of change and a strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organizationA desire to learn and grow as a leaderPrevious experience working with a culturally, religiously, and economically diverse staffA bold desire to talk to people you meet, hear and share stories, and ask people to take actionAble to stand and walk for extended periods of timeEffective communication skills and comfortability working with the public, talking to strangers, and asking people to take actionReliable transportation/ability to drive to and from canvassing locationsA data-capable smartphoneNot required, but would be advantages to success in this role : A high energy, highly organized, self starter capable of executing plans and implementing creative solutions to problems, ability to work with with a team to achieve a common goal, multi-lingual (particularly spanish and arabic), and previous canvassing experience who has experienced systemic oppression and/or gender-based violence are encouraged to apply.
