Instrumentation and Calibration Lead
Position SummaryThe Instrumentation and Calibration Lead provides technical leadership and oversight for the calibration, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation and control systems across campus facilities and process equipment. This role requires strong technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure all systems operate within specified parameters while maximizing efficiency. The position involves leading a team of technicians, coordinating with external service providers, and implementing solutions to protect equipment integrity and personnel safety.Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership and Supervision Lead and mentor a team of instrumentation technicians in daily calibration and maintenance activities. Assign work tasks, review completed work, and ensure quality standards are met. Provide technical guidance and training to team members on calibration procedures and troubleshooting techniques. Coordinate team schedules and manage workload distribution to meet production and compliance deadlines. Advanced System Maintenance and Optimization Lead complex troubleshooting and diagnostics for building automation, process control, and analytical instrumentation systems. Perform and oversee precision calibrations across diverse instrument portfolios, including flow meters, pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and analytical equipment. Optimize control loop performance and train team members on system improvements to achieve superior environmental control and energy efficiency outcomes. Advanced Calibration Operations Perform and supervise multi-point calibrations on temperature transmitters, pressure sensors, flow devices, pH meters, conductivity analyzers, and analytical systems using NIST-traceable standards. Execute and oversee linearity checks, span adjustments, and zero calibrations on analytical balances, spectrophotometers, particle counters, and environmental monitoring equipment. Utilize and train others on dead weight testers, dry block calibrators, and multifunction process calibrators to achieve required measurement uncertainties. Technical Systems Management Lead team operations with building management systems (BMS) and computerized maintenance monitoring systems (CMMS) to perform daily tasks and manage manufacturing procedure data. Coordinate system updates and improvements with engineering and IT departments. Critical System Calibration Leadership Oversee and perform calibrations on Water for Injection (WFI) conductivity and TOC analyzers, Clean Steam quality monitors, and compressed gas purity analyzers. Lead calibration activities for HVAC differential pressure transmitters, environmental chamber instrumentation, and filling line equipment including weight checks and volume verification systems. Documentation and Compliance Management Review and approve calibration certificates documenting as-found/as-left conditions and measurement uncertainties. Maintain calibration databases and ensure team compliance with CGMP. Develop and update calibration procedures and establish intervals based on instrument analysis and regulatory requirements. Program Leadership and Coordination Develop and implement risk-based calibration strategies considering instrument criticality and regulatory requirements. Analyze calibration data trends to optimize intervals and recommend equipment upgrades to management. Coordinate complex schedules to minimize process disruption while meeting compliance timelines. Manage and evaluate vendor relationships for specialized calibration services. Training and Development Develop and deliver comprehensive technical training programs on calibration techniques and troubleshooting methodologies. Demonstrate leadership while managing competing priorities effectively. Create training materials and standard operating procedures for team use. Required QualificationsDemonstrated ability to interpret and teach others to read technical drawings, P&IDs, and instrument specificationsAdvanced proficiency in business applications including MS Office Suite, Outlook, CMMS systems, and project management toolsValid driver's license requiredAvailability for on-call leadership responsibilities and emergency response as operational needs requireAbility to coordinate team response during off-hours emergenciesOther RequirementsStrong analytical and problem-solving capabilities for complex technical challenges and team managementFlexibility to work in diverse environmental conditions, including outdoor assignments in various weather conditionsPhysical RequirementsAbility to work in clean room manufacturing environments, including compliance with gowning and respirator protocolsCapability to perform and supervise overhead work and operations at elevated heightsPhysical capacity to operate electric hand tools, work from ladders, transport equipment, and lift materials up to 50 poundsPreferred QualificationsBachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, or related technical discipline preferred, or Associate degree with equivalent experienceMinimum four years of hands-on experience with instrumentation, controls, and calibration in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or similar regulated environments, with at least two years in a lead or supervisory roleComprehensive knowledge of calibration standards, procedures, and documentation requirements for analytical and process instrumentsAdvanced proficiency with calibration software and diagnostic tools including Fluke systems and CMMS platformsStrong understanding of process control theory, PID loop tuning, and control optimization strategiesExperience with project management and team coordinationExtensive experience with laboratory and analytical instrumentation calibration and maintenanceWorking knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements including 21 CFR Part 11Proficiency with Building Management Systems including Siemens, DeltaV, Honeywell, and Allen Bradley platformsProven leadership and supervisory experience with technical teamsRelevant professional certifications in instrumentation, calibration, or controls (ISA, NIST) strongly preferredDemonstrated application of GMP and GLP principles in instrumentation and calibration activitiesExcellent customer service experience with strong client interaction capabilitiesExceptional interpersonal communication and presentation skills, both oral and writtenAbility to lead teams and work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining focus and productivityStrong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
