Lead Senior Engineering Technician - Bridge Bureau (DOT/GO/PINF #19086)

Applicant lists may be screened more than once. The Bridge Management Section is part of the New Mexico Department of Transportation's (NMDOT) Bridge Bureau. The Bridge Management Section is tasked with the management of NMDOT's existing bridge inventory and bridge database and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) AASHTOWare Bridge Resource Management (BrM) program. The Section oversees bridge inspections, oversize and overweight vehicle permitting, bridge analysis and routing of permit vehicles, bridge load rating, bridge maintenance price agreements, and provides engineering and inspection support to the six (6) NMDOT District offices. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government. Why does the job exist? This Senior Lead Engineering Technician position exists to ensure compliance with 23 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 650 Subpart C - National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). The NBIS requires states to maintain a program to continually inspect all bridges in New Mexico to ensure safety for the traveling public. The position will provide technical support to NMDOT's six (6) District offices to ensure the NBIS requirements are met. It will also include other Bridge Management Section duties. How does it get done? Primary responsibilities of this position will include: * Provide support to the six (6) District bridge inspection programs. * Assist with the management of consultant assigned inspections including routine, element, timber, Nonredundant Steel Tension Member (NSTM), underwater, in-depth and other special inspections. * Assist with bridge inspection quality assurance reviews, Rail Runner bridge inspections, District or consultant assigned bridge inspections requiring the bridge underside access vehicle (SNOOPER) and other District requests or needs. * Assists with the management of NMDOT's Bridge Preservation Funds and Bridge Formula Funds. * Assist with the maintenance of NMDOT's bridge database (AASHTOWare BrM). * Assist with the recently implemented requirements and changes to the National Bridge Inspection Standards and the Specifications for the National Bridge Inventory (NBIS and SNBI). Who are the customers? This position serves the NMDOT's Bridge Bureau, NMDOT's six (6) District offices, Federal requirements and the public. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following: * Civil engineering technician proficiency and preferably experience with NBIS bridge inspections. * Comprehension of basic engineering principles and experience working with other technical personnel. * Cursory level of computer skills is required including the use of spreadsheets and database software. * Qualified NBIS bridge inspection team leader or have the ability to obtain the qualification within a reasonable time frame. Minimum Qualification High School Diploma or equivalent and eight (8) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results. Working Conditions Work is generally performed in an office setting and divided between an office and field work. Field work in varying weather conditions on multiple projects will include occasional travel and field work to bridge and highway structure sites, night-time bridge inspections, moderate to extreme weather conditions, moderate to high traffic conditions and work under bridges which may span over rivers or over moderate to extremely high features. Sitting/standing/driving for extended periods of time and extended periods of work at a computer terminal with some bending may be required. Lifting up to fifty pounds may be required.
