This role ensures the bank operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. The Internal Auditor reports functionally to the Audit Committee and administratively to the Chief Executive Officer, depending on your governance structure.Key ResponsibilitiesAudit Planning & Risk AssessmentDevelop and maintain a risk-based annual internal audit plan aligned with regulatory expectations.Conduct periodic risk assessments to ensure audit coverage reflects changes in products, processes, technology, and regulatory requirements.Conduct Internal AuditsPerform operational, financial, compliance, and IT-related audits across all business lines.Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, accuracy of financial records, safeguarding of assets, and adherence to policies and procedures.Document audit work, prepare audit reports, and communicate findings clearly and promptly to management and the Audit Committee.Compliance & Regulatory OversightAssess compliance with:Section 39 of the FDI Act – safety and soundness standards for internal controls and information systems.Section 36 of the FDI Act & FDIC Part 363 – annual audit and reporting requirements (note: your bank is below current $1B thresholds but still subject to Section 36 basic requirements).OCC/FDIC Interagency Policy Statements on internal audit functions and outsourcing.Support state and federal regulatory exams by providing audit documentation and performing follow-up testing on exam findings.Follow-Up & Corrective Action MonitoringTrack remediation of audit and regulatory findings to ensure timely corrective action by management.Report unresolved issues to the Audit Committee.Governance & ReportingProvide regular reports to the Audit Committee on audit results, emerging risks, control weaknesses, and trends.Maintain independence and objectivity in all audit work, consistent with regulatory expectations for internal audit programs.Oversight of Outsourced or Co-Sourced Audit Support (if applicable)Manage relationships with third-party providers performing specialized audits (e.g., IT, cybersecurity, loan review).QualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.3+ years of auditing or banking experience (internal audit, public accounting, or regulatory examination preferred).Professional certifications such as CGRC, CIA, CISA, or CPA preferred.Knowledge & SkillsStrong understanding of internal controls, risk management frameworks, bank operations, and regulatory requirements.Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.Ability to work independently and maintain strict confidentiality.Relevant Regulations to Reference in the Job DescriptionThese regulations specifically govern internal audit expectations for insured depository institutions and community banks.FDIC RegulationsFDIC Part 363 – Annual Independent Audits & Reporting RequirementsInternal auditor supports the bank in complying with Section 36 of the FDI Act, which applies to all FDIC-insured institutions.Section 39 of the FDI Act – Safety & Soundness StandardsRequires banks to maintain effective internal controls, information systems, and internal audit systems as part of safe-and-sound operations.Interagency GuidanceInteragency Policy Statement on the Internal Audit Function & OutsourcingExplains expectations for independence, competence, risk-based planning, and oversight of outsourced audit services.Auditing, audit program design, and board/audit committee oversight.
