Veterinary Care Assistant (Vet Tech Cert Required)
Bergin University of Canine Studies’ (BUCS) Vet Care Assistant is required to have met the following specific educational requirements:
a. A Bachelor of Science Degree preferably in Psychology, Animal Science, Cynology (Canine Studies) or Canine Health with a minor in one of the other listed areas;
b. A Vet Tech License (RVT);
c. Preferably a Master of Science Degree in Human-Canine Life Science;
2. Prior experience necessary for this position includes:
a. A minimum of three years working as a vet technician;
b. A minimum of five years involved in breeding, pup whelping, kennel management and pup enrichment;
c. Work in or a strong knowledge of the field of dog health care;
3. Basic qualifications include the following areas:
a. The ability to excite, inspire and educate post-secondary students about dog health care;
b. Knowledge of and an ability to assist in dog health care supporting dog training programs;
c. Knowledge of and experience working with veterinarians in dog health care;
d. Ability, knowledge and desire to conduct research into dog health care;
e. Local, state, national and international connections;
f. Compatibility with the Bergin College of Canine Studies (BUCS) and Paws for Purple Hearts (PPH)’s direction and purpose.

1. Providing or ensuring the provision of Bergin College of Canine Studies and Paws for Purple Hearts’ puppy and dog health care (including that of the our service and facility dogs after placement), working in conjunction with the site veterinarians, health care managers, the BUCS PPH’s
Dog Program Managers, Director of Genetic Sciences, Puppy Enrichment Manager, puppy parents, puppy technicians and the PPH Senior Instructors or assigned staff;
2. Supporting dog breeding’s and whelping’s with the Director of Genetic Sciences, and all related staff;
3. Consulting to help determine type of in-house or outside vet care needed;
4. Ordering, storing and dispensing puppy and dog medications;
5. Overseeing dosing of weekly, monthly and annual dog meds;
6. Scheduling and/or handling pup and dog physicals, vet appointments and tests;
7. Dog Health Record File Maintenance;
8. On call as needed;
9. Insightful dog health management, reporting, record keeping, communications and interpersonal skills;
10. Attendance at the meetings of the related to puppy and dog health, reporting to the BUCS’ and PPH Dog Program managers as well as developing relationships with and providing support to BUCS’ and PPH Veterinarians;
11. Commitment to the College’s and PPH’s mission, goals, objectives and long range plans;
12. All other duties as assigned by the BUCS’ Dog Program Director or President/CEO.
1. a. Consulting about any routine or non-routine medical needs of BUCS’ and PPH program puppies and dogs on-site or placed with students, inmates, pup parents or program trainers and instructors:
Responsibilities
i. Working in conjunction with BUCS’ and PPH veterinarian oversight and direction
ii. Providing on-going care as needed
b. Consulting with PPH & BUCS Client Manager on routine and non-routine medical needs of grad placed dogs if required:
i. Working in conjunction with BUCS’ and PPH veterinarian oversight and direction
ii. Ensuring on-going care is provided
2. Supporting dog breeding’s and whelping’s with the Director of Genetic Sciences, and all related staff:
a. Attendance at breeding’s/whelping’s as necessary
i. Helping breed and whelping pups
ii. Teaching students as part of their learning experience
b. Oversee whelps as necessary:
i. Taking care of mom and whelps
ii. Ensuring:
1. Time of birth recorded
2. Weights recorded morning and night for 2 weeks plus
3. Identification is handled
4. Monitoring pup suckling
5. All other needs of mom and pups
3. Consulting to help determine type of in-house or outside vet care needed:
a. With BUCS’ veterinary oversight
b. Follow-up on health issues
4. Ordering, storing and dispensing puppy and dog medications:
a. Ordering BUCS’ meds and vaccines through Victor Medical or other businesses
b. Ordering PPH meds and vaccines through Victor Medical or other businesses
5. Overseeing dosing of weekly, monthly and annual dog meds:
a. Dosing out monthly meds - heartworm and flea/tick control:
i. Done with students as part of their learning experience
ii. Following up with PPH sites
b. Dosing meds for health issues/spay/neuter:
i. With BUCS’ and PPH veterinary oversight
ii. Done with students as part of their learning experience
6. Scheduling and/or handling pup and dog physicals, vet appointments and tests:
a. Regular vaccines
b. Physicals
c. Medical problems
d. Pregnancy Ultrasound checks
e. Alert BUCS’ veterinarian via text or voicemail of any concerns with the dogs so (s)he can assist with possible treatments, recommendations, or to set appt to see the dog, if not on a day (s)he is there, for weekly checks
f. Sending out tests through Idexx or appropriate company
g. Scheduling appointments with outside vets
h. Puppy and breeding, of OFA elbows
i. Spays/neuters, out of norm tests/procedures
j. Pennhips for breeders and assistance dogs
7. Dog Health Record File Maintenance:
a. Help update/provide medical information in IWDR dog files to dog staff weekly
i. Done with students as part of their learning experience
ii. Done with staff as necessary
b. Help update/provide medical information in Client/Dog Tracker and other pup and dog files
