The individual will be directly responsible for the prompt, efficient, and accurate performance of a variety of histological procedures on tissue specimens. They will be responsible for the identification and processing of all tissue specimens received in anatomic pathology. An appropriate sequential accession number will be assigned to each tissue specimen while maintaining absolute certainty of patient identification at all times throughout the processing and handling procedures. All patient demographic information, specimen source, and physician or surgeon details must be entered accurately for each specimen received. The histotechnologist will assist the pathologist with the gross examination of all tissue specimens by providing accurately labeled tissue cassettes for each specimen as it is examined. Responsibilities include loading and operating the tissue processor and providing any requested assistance to the pathologist. The individual must meticulously process and cut sections from embedded tissue blocks, stain them, and deliver prepared slides to the pathologist promptly for daily microscopic examination. They will assist the pathologist with frozen section preparations immediately after specimens are received in the histology department. Special histochemical staining procedures will be performed as required by the pathologist. These special histochemical stains must be completed within the timeframe requested for timely diagnostic reporting. Slides or any anatomical materials must be prepared for sending to other laboratories for consultation or processing as deemed necessary by the pathologist. Properly indexed tissue slides and blocks must be filed for storage and efficient retrieval. The individual must ensure that slides are retained for the proper length of time before discarding. Assistance with the rotation of all patient specimens located in storage sites is also required. Holiday coverage will be expected as needed.
