Project Engineer – Tunnels (NY/NJ & Boston) Mott MacDonald is excited to invite talented professionals to join our dynamic and rapidly growing tunnel team. We are currently seeking adaptable and highly motivated civil, geotechnical, or structural engineers to serve as Project Engineer within our tunnels resource group. This role centers on underground design and construction projects, providing the opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge work in the transportation and water/wastewater sectors. Responsibilities Support the delivery of our existing portfolio of tunnelling projects in the U.S. and Canada. Oversee staff and execution of field investigation programs to collect data for use in design, condition assessments, and the preparation of reports. Contribute to detailed analyses for our projects involving tunnels and underground structures. Develop field instrumentation programs and evaluate collected data. Manage staff producing design solutions, reports, and contributions to/reviews of specifications and drawings. Write reports for submission to clients, including design‑related technical memoranda and reports. Engage directly with clients, liaising and responding to queries, and attending design and progress meetings. Contribute to and prepare proposals for submission to clients. Lay out and develop a design program and independently manage a team of staff. Manage and mentor junior/graduate engineers and support their development. Candidate Specification Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering required; Master’s in a related field preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license in New Jersey, New York, or Massachusetts, or ability to obtain a license within 12 months. NCTI Certified preferred. 5–8 years of experience in engineering consultancy (excluding education), with preference for experience in New York. Proficiency in structural software: STRAND7, SAP, STAAD or equivalent. Proficiency in geotechnical software (Plaxis, GeoStudio packages/Slide, Rocscience packages, geotechnical data management such as GINT/Holebase). Working knowledge of BIM tools (Bentley/Autodesk) advantageous. Demonstrated record in design with experience in geotechnical engineering, ground characterization for soil and rock, and a working knowledge of concrete, steel, and foundation design. Strong references from past managers or clients. Interest in underground design and construction for the transport, water, or wastewater sectors, with multidisciplinary working experience advantageous. Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills. Expected salary for this position: NY: $108,000 – $132,000. NJ: $103,000 – $126,000. MA: $107,000 – $130,000.
