Sr. Systems Engineer

Sr. Systems Engineer Status: Exempt (Salaried) Department: Engineering Position Summary As a Sr. Systems Engineer, you will lead safety & reliability engineering activities across Plug's infrastructure systems product life cycle to mitigate the probability and consequence of failures. In this role you will collaborate with stakeholders in product engineering, service engineering, technicians, vendors and others as needed to develop and apply good engineering practices to ensure products operate safely, meet the operational availability expectations of customers and achieve annualized service cost targets. This is an applied safety & reliability engineering role encompassing product development (requirements, reliability modeling & predictions, risk management, verification, etc.) and operations (RAM metrics improvement, field reliability growth, maintenance cost optimization, etc.). The successful candidate for this position will be a motivated self-starter with a collaborative mindset, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and has the aptitude to deliver systems with high operational availability and optimum performance. Core Duties and Responsibilities Create a reliability data system for fielded products enabling characterization of component reliability, failure mode-cause classification, applied stress, etc. to inform new product designs and fielded system improvements. Implement a feedback loop to capture key learnings, component failure modes-causes and resulting effects and related knowledge from field issues to improve engineering design and delivery practices to prevent recurrence. Create and report on infrastructure system RAM metrics, identify gaps to product expectations and establish priorities for resolving. Implement a structured reliability growth program for fielded infrastructure systems measuring fleet-level reliability, quantifying gaps and driving a reliability strategy to correct failure modes and achieve targets. Establish verifiable operational availability, reliability and service cost requirements for new products. Model system reliability to enable design tradeoffs during product development to assure RAM metrics are achieved by design. Develop "design for reliability" methods to enable the new product development teams to deliver on system reliability and service cost objectives. Implement an efficient failure mode and effects analysis process to ensure top failure modes have been mitigated by design, prior to product release. Conduct and actively manage risk assessment and process hazard analysis programs and documentation. Complete and coach others on probabilistic risk assessments to ensure systems have an acceptably low level of risk with regards to achieving safety and reliability expectations. Develop field-based reliability acceptance protocol (e.g., demonstration testing) for infrastructure systems. Establish a probabilistic method for assessing realized field risks and determining type of field mitigation response required. Lead cross-functional efforts to improve Plug's overall organizational reliability capability, referencing IEEE 1624-2008 or similar assessment criteria. Represent Plug Power in a professional manner in all interactions. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field of study with a concentration in reliability engineering. Advanced degree specializing in reliability engineering preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience applying reliability engineering methods for industrial projects. Experience distilling reliability engineering practices and theory to application in a cross-functional product development environment. Ability to analyze product data, transform it into information and use it to drive product improvements. Experience conducting probabilistic risk analysis for product safety. Proven skill set with a variety of computer and software programs including: Statistical tools (R, JMP, etc.), Reliability Modeling tools, Databases, MS Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and others. ReliaSoft Synthesis experience preferred. Superior communication and public speaking skills with capability to present information effectively to diverse audiences and stakeholders while responding to questions. Proven leadership, teamwork and flexibility to manage project complexity, including changes in projects and priorities. Ability to write reports and procedural manuals Excellent follow-through Exempt employees are expected to work as many hours as is necessary to complete their job responsibilities. This may require they work more than eight hours a day and more than five days or 40 hours per week.
