Job SummaryUnder general direction, is responsible for performing complex professional legal work involvingresearch, consultation, drafting, and negotiation of various legal documentson behalf of the City of San Antonio. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment.This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. Frio, San Antonio, TX 78207Working Schedule7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - FridayEssential Job FunctionsReviews, prepares documents for, and prosecutes cases in Municipal Court.Prepares and presents cases before the courts.Reviews cases set for trial and prepares legal briefs and memoranda in connection with pending cases.Advises City staff and elected and appointed City Officials in various areas of municipal law.Negotiates, drafts, and reviews contracts, real estate documents, and agreements.Drafts legislation, code provisions, regulations, ordinances, amendments, resolutions, and guidelines or policies.Attends public meetings of City Council, boards and commissions and advises and addresses members in executive sessions or makes public presentations.Advocates for the City in a wide variety of settings, including negotiations, dispute resolutions, mediations, trials, hearings, and administrative processes. May prosecute on behalf of and defend the City in legal proceedings.Timely and appropriately responds to inquiries from the general public and media about public information and municipal regulations and procedures.Compiles data, statistics or other information related to legal work for reports.Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.Job RequirementsJob Requirements for Assistant City Attorney I:L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Texas.No substitution for education allowed.Valid Class "C" Driver's License.Job Requirements for Assistant City Attorney II:L.L.B. or J.D. Degree from an accredited school of law.Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as a practicing Attorney.Years of full-time municipal law experience may be substituted two (2) for one (1), up to a maximum of four years credit.Licensed and ingood standing to practice law in the State ofTexas.No substitution for education allowed.Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.Additional Requirement* Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony Convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor Convictions, an Open Arrest for Any Criminal Offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and Family Violence Convictions.Preferred QualificationsExperience with the Texas Public Information Act.Experience with the Texas Open Meetings Act.Knowledge of municipal law and city code.* Knowledge of Texas statutes related to Local Government.Applicant InformationUnless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks.
