Platform Software Engineer Job Summary Assist in selection and adaptation of operating system(s) for our line of ultra-rugged handheld computers. Develop and debug low level kernel and device driver code to create interface between hardware and operating system. Develop applications, control panels and settings to allow users access to custom features of the product. Integrate various software components from third parties, or those developed in-house, into an operating system image whose feature set meets a wide variety of customer needs. Experience with operating system hardware abstraction layer development is a plus. Job Duties and Responsibilities Uses industry-standard development and build tools to integrate various software components from various third parties, or those developed in-house into an operating system image whose feature set meets a wide variety of customer needs. Develops utility and value-added features for inclusion in an operating system image. Reads schematics to understand the logic, power and voltage capabilities of the electronics that power Juniper Systems products. Troubleshoots various aspects of the operating system or third-party programs as anomalies are discovered. Familiarity with diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters and other equipment to debug and understand proper electronic functionality. Maintain knowledge of current operating system technologies as well as other industry advancements in components that are part of our line of ultra-rugged handheld computers. Works with product managers to define and refine product specifications to meet customer needs within technical limitations. Uses product specifications to create a software design that shows details of how the software will be built to meet the requirements. Writes code based on the software design. Integrates and tests code. Verifies that software meets customer requirements. Supports the sales team and customers in understanding the software, resolving problems, and adding enhancements. Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Bachelor of Science degree in the discipline of the job and 3 years’ experience OR an equivalent combination of schooling and experience. Object oriented software development using various programming languages such as C++, C#, Java and other programming languages within various frameworks in multiple operating systems. Responsibility, Accountability, and Supervisory Responsibilities May have supervisory responsibility and this individual may occasionally be in charge of a project or activity in which he or she is accountable for the work of other employees or may occasionally have responsibility for other outcomes including product design or project execution. Normally this will be within his or her own department. A supervisor will assign his or her duties to be completed, but this individual will be able to set his or her own schedule. Communication, Negotiation, and Networking Skills The job requires written and verbal communication skills on the level of a college graduate (including spelling). Requires the ability to network effectively within and outside the company. Requires communication skills which enable the writing of general communication documents for internal and external purposes. Requires some skill in negotiating with other personnel and with other firms. Working Conditions Physical Demands: This position requires sitting for extended periods of time and use of hands. Requires the ability to see computer screens and other equipment. Working Hours and Conditions: Normal is 40 hours per week. May require more than 40 hours a week depending on projects. Monday thru Friday, normal time off for Holidays. Optional 9 hours/day, 9 days in two weeks, Friday 8 hours, alternate Friday off. Occasional travel required, less than 20 nights away per year.
