Sr. Application Engineer (COBOL, Java)

Overview You will drive modernization efforts by delivering cloud-based solutions and data integration across platforms. In this role, you collaborate with cross-functional teams to modernize legacy systems, optimize performance, and ensure secure, compliant deliverables. You will mentor others, explain complex concepts to diverse audiences, and help shape Vanguard’s technology ecosystem. ResponsibilitiesPerform expert system analysis, design, development, and implementation of applications and databases with third-party integrationsEnsure performance, viability, and secure delivery of IT deliverables; evaluate build vs buy decisionsCoordinate code promotion through development, test, and production; provide production support and change control documentationProvide subject matter expertise in development methodology and architecture; mentor junior staffParticipate in design, code, and test inspections; communicate technical considerations to stakeholdersUnderstand client business functions and Vanguard’s tech stack; stay current with industry toolsInterface with cross-functional teams and articulate issues at appropriate levels; ensure compliance with policiesEngage in Data Modernization & Integration, supporting ETL and data synchronization across platformsLead/assist Stored Procedure tuning and performance, ensure latency/SLA targets; support large-scale testing and validationSupport modernization of legacy WT applications to cloud-based solutions and Java-based services; collaborate on mainframe-to-cloud migration Key requirementsEight+ years of related experience; at least two years development experienceUndergraduate degree or equivalentHands-on COBOL and stored procedures with performance tuning experienceData integration and data movement across business domains; ETL support for modernized data sourcesCross-functional collaborationMentoring and knowledge sharingStrong communication and stakeholder managementCOBOL and stored procedure tuningETL and data integrationData modernization and integration
