MRHS promotes responsible pet ownership, reduces animal homelessness, and serves the community through compassionate care and advocacy.Position Summary The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive officer of MRHS and is responsible for leading the organization’s mission, strengthening financial sustainability, and ensuring effective daily operations. This role requires both strategic leadership and hands-on execution, including direct responsibility for financial administration, shelter operations, animal welfare, and organizational systems.Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & GovernanceProvide overall leadership, direction, and accountability for organizational performance and animal welfare outcomes Partner with the Board of Directors to implement strategy and ensure strong governance practices Maintain clear boundaries between governance and daily operations Financial Management & AdministrationOversee all financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, payroll, and cash flow management Monitor all accounts and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting Manage and document all revenue streams, including donations and payment platforms, in alignment with internal controls Accounts Payable & Vendor ManagementOversee the full invoice lifecycle, including receipt, coding, approval, and timely payment Maintain organized financial records and coordinate with vendors to ensure uninterrupted operations Operations & Organizational ManagementLead all day-to-day shelter and organizational operations, ensuring efficiency, accountability, and humane standards of care Oversee animal intake, medical coordination, adoption processes, and program execution in collaboration with staff and partners Supervise staff and volunteers, including hiring, scheduling, performance management, and discipline Establish and maintain effective administrative, operational, and reporting systems, including key organizational documents Ensure compliance with policies, regulatory requirements, and audit standards Step into operational roles as needed to maintain continuity of services Community Engagement & Resource DevelopmentServe as the primary representative of the organization within the community and with local partners, including municipalities and veterinary providers Build and maintain relationships with donors, volunteers, and stakeholders Lead fundraising efforts and support long-term financial sustainability Oversee outreach, marketing, and communication efforts, including digital platforms QualificationsProven leadership experience in nonprofit management or a related field Strong financial and operational management experience Experience working with a Board of Directors and understanding of governance best practices Ability to lead both strategically and operationally in a hands-on environment Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills Knowledge of animal welfare practices or willingness to quickly develop competency Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Work Environment & ExpectationsFull-time leadership role requiring both strategic oversight and active operational involvement Regular interaction with staff, volunteers, board members, vendors, and the community Ability to perform physical tasks associated with shelter operations as needed (Lift up to 35 pounds.
