Title: School NursePurpose of Position: To ensure the physical health and well-being of the school communityEmployment Status: Full-time ReportingReports to: Principal Location: Assigned campusEssential Functions:Deliver and coordinate health and wellness services for familiesConduct and coordinate health screening programs at periodic intervals or on referral, as specified by local and state guidelinesProvide basic First Aid to students Refers identified health problems to the appropriate resource for correction and/or ameliorationSend home DIET form to parents for pediatrician to fill out for food allergiesInitiates follow-up of basic health problems as requiredAssesses and evaluates ill students during the school day and provides appropriate care and/or referrals as necessaryInterprets health status and/or problems to the student, parents, and school personnel and makes recommendations when appropriatePlans, coordinates and implements a program of health instructionProvide health pockets for students by grade or homeroomProvide vision and hearing screenings on all referred students as well as K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders and communicate to parents of those who failed screeningProvide dental screenings for 2nd grade students and refer those in need of treatmentServes as a resource to school personnel regarding various aspects of health educationWork with SAT team to create and implement student Health Plans and Section 504 Individualized Assistance Plans as neededMaintain constant communication with families regarding all health related instancesAssists in the control of communicable diseases within the schoolAssess and assist in maintaining a healthy and safe school environmentMaintain and monitor appropriate health and wellness supplies for campusComplianceMaintains up to date cumulative health records on all students and completed required administrative recordsMonitor, train and assist school personnel to comply with medication policiesCollect and manage all necessary information pertaining to a student’s immunization history and hearing/vision screenings and ensure this information is entered into the state databaseEnsure appropriate staff are trained to administer emergency care(i.e. CPR, AED, etc.)Ensure appropriate staff are trained to respond to student emergenciesProvide District and building level supportWork with the Director of Special Populations to create and implement systems for program administration, including referral methods, data collection and storageProvide training and technical assistance as necessary, especially in areas mandated by local, state and federal guidelinesCommunicate effectively with students, staff, and communityDemonstrate sensitivity to families’ and teachers’ individual differences and cultural backgroundsAllocate time and resources effectivelyRespect confidentiality Serve on the School Wellness CommitteeCreate an Environment of Respect and RapportEncourage and model respectful talk, active listening and turn takingAcknowledge students’ backgrounds and lives outside of the classroomExhibit body language indicative of warmth and caring to studentsEncourage and model politeness and support for all community membersEncourage and model fairness in all interactionsDisplay Professionalism and Commitment to the Audubon CommunityCultivate positive two-way communication between school and familiesCreate frequent opportunities for families to engage in the learning processRegularly work with colleagues to share and plan for student successParticipate in professional development opportunities that emphasize improving practiceRegularly participate in or initiate school activities which further the mission of the schoolRegularly participate in or initiate activities which emphasize community serviceSupports students even in the face of difficult situations or conflicting policiesFulfills organizational mandates regarding policies and proceduresEducation, Training and Experience:REQUIREDGraduate of an accredited school of nursingHold a license from the State Board of Nursing or have previous experience as a Registered NurseAt least 2 year’s experience as a RNEligible for certification by the State Department of Education as a School NurseExperience in and/or understanding of the public school system including charter schools is desirablePREFERREDBachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing Experience working as a nurse with children or adolescentsExperience working within an elementary school environmentNOTE: The foregoing list of essential duties and responsibilities is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.
