Commodity Accountant (Houston)
Position Summary:Perform general ledger accounting functions for a commodities trading firm under the supervision of the Accounting Manager. Record and maintain general ledger entries for a commodity including documentation for internal controls and compliance purposes. Prepare monthly financial statements for assigned commodities. The position will be working with the financial reporting group, booking accruals, completing actualizations and recording inventory journals for trading and cargo business in addition to ad hoc projects and reporting related to the accounting and reporting functions.Key ResponsibilitiesCommodity Accounting & Close ProcessPerform month-end close activities for assigned commodity desks, including journal entries and reportingPrepare accruals, trade true-ups, and settlement entries in accordance with accounting standardsRecord and maintain general ledger activity, ensuring accuracy and completenessSupport actualization of trades and cargo movements, including recording inventoryReconciliations & ControlsPrepare account reconciliations and investigate variancesMaintain accurate records and ensure compliance with internal controls and policiesAssist with internal and external audit requestsFinancial Analysis (FP&A)Perform P&L analysis for trading activities and explain key drivers/variancesSupport budgeting, forecasting, and planning processesPartner with business teams to provide insights into financial performanceSystems, Data & ReportingWork with large datasets to analyze trading and financial informationSupport system improvements, automation initiatives, and process enhancementsPrepare ad hoc reports and analysis as neededOvertime may be required during month-end close cyclesRequired QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or other related majorMinimum 1-3 years oil and gas accounting experience with industry knowledge and terminology, preferably with a trading company with knowledge of derivatives and financial hedging instrumentsEmploy fundamental accounting skills: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and account reconciliationsExperience in SAP or other accounting softwareProficiency in Excel, with the ability to organize large volumes of data and perform quantitative analysisStrong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across accounting, risk, and operations teamsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to independently research, analyze, and respond to internal and external inquiries with accuracy and attention to detailSelf-motivated with strong work habits, the ability to quickly learn new concepts, and consistently meet internal and external deadlinesPreferred QualificationsExperience in commodities trading, energy, or oil & gas industryCPA or CPA candidateThe Company reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify this job description and any of the responsibilities included herein at any time, for any reason, with or without advance notice.
