Thompson Hine LLP, an AmLaw 200 firm consistently recognized for its commitment to Innovation, Inclusion, collaborative culture, is seeking a strategic and results-driven Controller to join our Cleveland office.This individual has a key leadership role offering the opportunity to partner closely with firm leadership, drive financial excellence, and contribute to the continued growth and success of the firm. The Controller will be reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, and this person will be involved in all aspects of the operational accounting and finance function.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESMaintain overall responsibility for financial reporting, the annual capital and operating budgets and forecasts (in conjunction with the Director of FP&A), expense control, tax issues, general ledger maintenance, insurance, and ancillary business financial statements.Gather, report, analyze and utilize operational accounting, cost and planning data to help solve business problems and strategic issues facing the Firm.Work as a partner with the Chief Financial Officer to address sources and uses of capital, expense management, and in assessing potential strategic acquisitions and other expansion opportunities.Develop and execute sound accounting and internal control policies, principles and processes.Oversee the creation and maintenance of financial reports for management and the partnership.Coordinate with and act as a key partner with Firm management across all offices and departments.Manage the treasury function, including banking relationships and trust accounts for all offices and ancillary businesses.Manage the general accounting and accounts payable functions.Plan effective tax strategies and address federal, state and local tax issues as they arise.Oversee the annual audit and tax return preparation and have primary responsibility for communications with the external auditors and tax accountants.Communicate financial arrangements with partners and affiliates, including draw arrangements and capital requirements.Maintain business insurance coverages, relationships. Submit annual applications and make recommendations as to appropriate areas and levels of coverage. Work with internal General Counsel.Manage and lead a staff of exempt and non-exempt Finance employees.Other projects and duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSEducation, Training and/or ExperienceBachelor’s degree in accounting required.At least 8 years of accounting, tax and management experience required.CPA or MBA preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough understanding of economic, financial, marketing, and business management disciplines and relationship among these functions as well as Firm policies and procedures, cost and general accounting systems, and general overall operations to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position.Strong understanding of U.S. accounting and tax principles and practices.Capable of and demonstrate solid analytical thinking and familiar with Firm operations, financial practices and procedures.Capable of effectively interfacing with high level firm management and partners on corporate cost accounting and policy decisions.Strong systems and analysis skills. Thompson Hine uses Aderant Expert for time & billing and general ledger functions; Xcelerate for budgeting.Excellent customer service skills and telephone etiquette are mandatory.Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.Possesses interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with a diverse group of employees.Ability to handle tasks under pressure.Ability to adjust work schedule to work other hours, as required.This position requires the employee to work at a specified location and hours determined by the Manager for the benefit of the department and firm. Changes to the location and/or scheduled hours must be approved by the Manager.Growth mindset to enhance emotional intelligence, empathy and an understanding of inclusion and belonging practices that support managing and collaborating across differences.Certified Public Accountant required.Compensation is determined upon the market in which the position is located, the responsibilities of the position, the experience and skills of the applicant, and other job-related factors.
