This is the first step in a multi-level apprenticeship designed to develop knowledge, skills, and safe work practices under the supervision of experienced Journeymen. The role provides hands-on learning and practical training in the utility field.Job Duties And ResponsibilitiesWork safely on the construction, maintenance, and repair of energized and de-energized power linesAssist in setting poles and anchors according to safety and technical specificationsMaintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in clean, working conditionLearn to identify and work with distribution voltages and understand induced voltageLearn to read blueprints and assist in identifying structural or equipment issuesWork productively from aerial devices and at heights under supervisionAssist in assembling and erecting poles of varying heights and configurationsParticipate in framing and setting pole structures, including work on de-energized polesAssist in installing various line hardware and compression connectionsLearn and follow correct procedures for PPE use and inspection of rubber goods and cover-upClimb wood and steel poles/structures safely with proper tools and techniqueUnderstand and perform basic knot-tying and the use of hand linesLearn proper grounding procedures and minimum approach distancesUnderstand material types and equipment setup principles used in line workFunction effectively within a crew and demonstrate willingness to learn from othersPractice flagging and tagging procedures as instructedJob RequirementsHigh School Diploma or GED requiredValid Class A CDL required to be maintained while in position (or ability to obtain within 90 days)Must pass drug, alcohol, background, MVR, and clearinghouse checks upon hire and continuously while in positionMust pass a DOT physical examinationA basic understanding of electrical distribution systems is preferredFirst Aid and CPR certification preferred (or ability to obtain)Must be safety-conscious and willing to follow all company safety protocolsAble and willing to travel long distances on short noticeAble and willing to work extended hours, including overtime and weekendsAble and willing to work in all types of weather, including inclement conditionsDemonstrates strong work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to learnEffective communication and team collaboration skillsProfessionalism, integrity, and willingness to take initiativePhysical RequirementsMust be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequentlyAbility to bend, climb, kneel, stoop, and stand for extended periodsMust be able to climb poles, ladders, and steel structures using proper equipmentMust be able to work at heights and in confined spacesFrequent repetitive use of hands, wrists, and fingers for handling tools and materialsVisual acuity is required for identifying materials, reading instruments, and performing work with precisionMust be able to wear and operate personal protective equipment (PPE) for long periodsCapable of working outdoors year-round in all weather conditionsAble to perform physically demanding labor for extended hours, often under stressful or hazardous conditionsWorking ConditionsWork performed outdoors in all types of weather conditionsExposure to electrical hazards, construction environments, and elevated work platformsTravel required to various job sites, including occasional overnight staysExtended work hours, including early mornings, late evenings, and weekend shifts as neededKey AttributesSelf-Motivated - Takes initiative and responsibility for safety and quality.
