Lab Manager - Construction Materials Testing
Overview
You will lead the new Geotechnical & Construction Materials Lab in Orlando, driving autonomous setup and ongoing operations. You will supervise staff, ensure QA and safety, and maintain accreditation with AASHTO/FDOT, while delivering timely testing results for public and private clients. You will optimize workflows, manage equipment and reporting, and build strong client relationships. This role offers impact through establishing a high‑quality lab that supports critical geotechnical testing and construction materials work. Key to success is proactive problem-solving, clear communication, and hands-on leadership in a growing lab environment.
ResponsibilitiesLead testing operations for geotechnical soils, concrete, and asphalt for public/private clientsGenerate and submit testing reports, and supervise others in reportingManage lab workload and remove bottlenecks to meet deadlinesOversee testing procedures, data acquisition, analyses, and cleanupTrack lab KPI’s and weekly billingResearch and implement new testing proceduresMaintain QMS and ensure testing aligns with AASHTO and FDOT accreditationOversee equipment calibration, maintenance, upgrades, procurement and repairsMaintain client communications and cultivate relationshipsTroubleshoot equipment and provide mechanical support as neededMaintain lab cleanliness, stock, labeling, and record-keepingOversee lab safety and SOP adherence including chemical handling and disposalCommunicate effectively with contractors, clients, and team membersBe prepared for weekend/overtime work and potential travelPerform other duties as assigned
Key requirements5-10 years’ experience in leading and motivating a laboratory or technical groupExperience in soil and rock laboratory workProcess-driven operations and people managementExcellent verbal and written communication skillsMS Excel and Word proficiencyProfessional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not requiredACI and FDOT/CTQP certifications preferred (acquire within 1 year if not held)BS in civil engineering preferred or related fieldAbility to lift up to 50 lbs and tolerate lab environmentsWillingness to travel as neededstrong communicationleadership and people managementproblem-solving orientationgeotechnical soils testingconcrete testingasphalt testing
