Translator
Major duties:
● Provide timely accurate translations of speeches by high-ranking federal government officials, including the President of the United States and the Secretary of State.
● Translate fact sheets and other texts related to high-level foreign affairs events.
● Translate public diplomacy materials, including social media content, at the request of the State Department’s regional and functional bureaus as well as U.S. embassies and consulates.
● Translate public diplomacy videos produced by GPA’s video team.
● Translate into respective foreign languages content from GPA’s ShareAmerica website (https://share.america.gov/).
● Edit and proofread translation work by fellow workers and off-site translation companies to ensure maximum accuracy and readability. Other duties may include:
● Publishing ShareAmerica content, including videos and infographics.
● Distributing ShareAmerica and other GPA content through the above-mentioned social media platforms.
● Preparing and distributing social media feeds.
● Working with U.S. diplomatic missions and posts to enhance their capacity to use social media and provide support for their specific projects.
● Monitoring and analyzing available statistical data, including site traffic, hash tags, trending topics, etc.
● Composing reports for IME director and bureau leadership based on statistical data and other information collected from multiple sources within the Bureau.
Qualifications:
Education and Accreditation:
● Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism or International Relations. (Applicants with degrees in other areas may qualify with demonstrated related work experience.)
● Accreditation by a professional association, such as the American Translators Association (ATA), or another accrediting authority
Translation Experience:
● A staff position dedicated to translation or editing of translations at a federal agency, international organization, or translation company; or
● Previous experience in translating GPA or public diplomacy materials; or
● Significant experience as a freelance translator, which is defined as having at least five (5) years of full-time work in translation. Desktop Publishing Experience:
● Publishing website and other online content (using tools such as WordPress and Adobe Creative Cloud).
● Managing an organization’s presence on third-party platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
● Composing and publishing content containing photos as well as audio and video elements.
● Running social media analyses and writing analytical reports.
● Publishing foreign language social media content. Language:
● Native proficiency in the specific written and spoken foreign language.
● Native-like proficiency in English.
Knowledge:
● General knowledge of U.S. foreign policy objectives affecting or relating to communities that speak the target language.
● An in-depth knowledge of the culture, society, and political system of the communities that speak the target language.
Security Clearance:
● Background Check.
● Must posses or must pass a Moderate Risk Public Trust conducted by the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, Department of State.
