Public Records Researcher

This role is at the center of that work.The RoleAs a Public Records Researcher, you'll look up criminal, civil, and public records to help complete pre-employment background checks. You'll pull records from county, state, and federal court systems, then review them to determine whether they can be reported under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the laws of the state where the record was found. You'll also work directly with courts, government agencies, and outside research vendors to get what we need, when we need it.ResponsibilitiesResearch and process public records information (criminal, civil, and driving records) using online court portals, vendor databases, and public sources.Contact court clerks, government agencies, and third-party vendors to obtain records or clarify information.Review applicant provided information for accuracy, discrepancies, missing, or incomplete items.Review court records to confirm whether a record belongs to an applicant and whether it can be legally reported under applicable jurisdictional statutes, FCRA, and state laws.Manage daily workflows to maintain expected turnaround times.Provide exemplary customer support to clients and job applicants by relaying status updates and answering general questions.Cross-train in related departments to provide backup when needed.Requirements2+ years working in an office, research, legal, compliance, or investigative setting.Working knowledge of FCRA law: permissible purposes, disputes, and adverse action.Experience navigating online court databases, government records systems, or similar public records systems.Accurate alpha-numeric data entry skills.Proficiency in Adobe PDF and Windows-based platforms such as Microsoft Word and Excel.Ability to independently manage a high-volume queue within time-sensitive deadlines.Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, and fingerprinting (required for licensing).A proven track record of successfully working independently in a fully remote environment, including managing your own schedule, communicating proactively, and consistently meeting deadlines without in-person supervision.EducationA degree in criminal justice, paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related discipline is preferred. Equivalent on-the-job experience in public records research, court work, legal compliance, fact-checking, or investigative support is equally valued.
