Position SummaryThe Estimator / Planner develops accurate cost estimates, repair scopes, and executable job plans for heavy machining and rotating equipment repair projects. This role requires strong technical understanding of large industrial components, precision machining processes, high-tolerance repair methods, and engineered refurbishment practices. The Estimator / Planner ensures that customer requirements are fully captured, risks are identified, and work is planned with an emphasis on safety, quality, and efficiency.Key ResponsibilitiesEstimating – Technical & CommercialAnalyze customer RFQs, drawings, reverse-engineered geometry, worn components, and inspection findings. Prepare detailed cost estimates for machining, welding, metal spray, disassembly, cleaning, NDT, balancing, and engineered repair processes. Estimate repair strategies for rotating equipment such as: Pump shafts, sleeves, impellers Turbine rotors and casings Compressor components Gearbox housings and gears Large rollers, cylinders, and bearing journals Calculate machining tolerances, fits, runouts, and GD&T requirements. Determine tooling, fixturing, materials, subcontracted operations, and labor resources. Build customer-facing quotations aligned with profitability targets. Update and maintain historical cost databases for accuracy and continuous refinement. Job Planning – Workflow & ExecutionConvert estimates into detailed, step-by-step job routings. Define process sequences for disassembly, inspection, machining, welding, heat treatment, balancing, assembly, and testing. Draft or support creation of detailed repair procedures and machining plans. Coordinate scheduling and capacity planning with Operations. Identify and procure required tooling, fixtures, measuring instruments, and raw materials. Ensure all quality, safety, and engineering requirements are properly integrated into job plans. Monitor work progress and update plans as scope evolves or condition assessments change. Technical Project CoordinationSupport Engineering in developing reverse-engineering models, repair strategies, and tolerance stack-ups. Provide direct technical communication with customers regarding scope, timelines, and change orders. Conduct pre-job and post-job reviews to analyze estimate vs. actual variances. Support root cause analysis, equipment failure investigations, and engineered upgrades. Drive continuous improvement initiatives in estimating, process planning, and workflow optimization. QualificationsRequired Technical Skills3–5+ years estimating, planning, or machining experience in heavy industrial repair or large-part machining. Strong understanding of machining processes: turning, milling, boring, grinding, balancing, OD/ID machining, welding, and metal spray repair. Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T. Working knowledge of rotating equipment components, mechanical fits, and precision alignment. Familiarity with NDT methods (MT, PT, UT) and how results impact repair scope. Proficiency with ERP/MRP job costing systems. Preferred Skills & ExperienceExperience in power generation, oil & gas, or industrial equipment repair facilities. Background as a machinist, repair technician, or manufacturing engineer. CAD/CAM knowledge for interpreting and creating models or machining strategies. Understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment processes, failure modes, and material selection. Ability to perform basic geometry/trigonometry for machining calculations. Soft SkillsExcellent communication skills across technical and non-technical teams. Strong analytical reasoning with high attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight timelines. Customer-focused mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
