As a surgical scrub you will be expected to be at the operating site on time and ready, for any and all job duties. Being late or tardy is unacceptable, and will be disciplined according to protocol.
As a surgical scrub technician you will be where all the action is. You are a key component in an operating room. You need to be able to handle instruments efficiently and you must be able to keep moving.
Your job will be to make sure everything is running smoothly. All tools need to be kept sterile, and orderly. Your job is to prep a patient before and after surgery. Surgical technicians work hand in hand with doctors, nurses and laboratory personnel.
First you will make sure the operating room is ready. You will check for non-sterile equipment and make sure that everything is updated and working properly. Therefore you must be educated in all new surgical technology, such as fiber optics and lasers.
You will prepare the patient for surgery by washing and disinfecting the area for surgery. You will be responsible for bringing the patient to the operating room. Your job is not done there. You have plenty of other responsibilities. You will help the surgical team "scrub" in, hence the name Surgical Scrub Technician.
As a scrub you will be making sure the staff in the operating room is on the task at hand. You will serve as the doctor eyes and ears. The scrub technician will ask for sutures, instruments, and any other piece of equipment to keep the operation moving in a timely and efficient manner.
The scrub duties are not done when the surgery is done. The scrub will assist in the proper dressings at the end of the case. Putting on garments and assisting with the cleanup of the patient, before being transferred to recovery room. Scrub will help in transfer of the patient all the way to recovery.
Along with other staff, the scrub handles the cleaning of operating room, autoclave room, and all other areas in the operating area. These areas need to be cleaned of blood borne pathogens, trash, instruments, and any other matter that is used in the operating areas.
All operating room areas are to be restocked at the end of each day. The scrub will pull all items needed for the surgical procedures the day before, and have all surgical instruments cleaned before leaving.
