Engineer Intern
POSITION OVERVIEWThe Engineering Intern provides technical and administrative support to the City Engineer in the areas of civil engineering, infrastructure planning, construction inspection, and development review. This position assists with data collection, fieldwork, and preparation of reports, maps, and drawings. The intern will gain hands-on experience in municipal engineering practices and public infrastructure management while supporting ongoing City projects and operations.REPORTING STRUCTUREDepartment: EngineeringReports To: City EngineerFLSA Status: Non-Exempt $20.00/HREmployment Status: Internship (Part-Time or Full-Time as assigned) Work Location: Dardenne Prairie City HallESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESThe duties listed below are representative of this position and do not encompass all possible tasks. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.Engineering Support· Assist with review of site plans, subdivision plats, and construction drawings for conformance with City engineering standards and codes.· Support the City Engineer in the preparation of cost estimates, project quantities, and technical specifications.· Perform basic civil engineering calculations under the direction of the City Engineer.· Assist with maintaining maps, drawings, and databases for City infrastructure and utilities.· Conduct fieldwork, collect survey data, and perform site observations for ongoing projects.Project & Construction Assistance· Support construction inspection activities, including documenting work progress, taking photos, and verifying contractor compliance with approved plans.· Assist with preparation of reports, memos, and project documentation.· Track project schedules and assist with budget and cost tracking as directed.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation & Experience· Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.· Completed coursework in surveying, transportation, drainage, or construction management preferred.· Previous internship or field experience in municipal or civil engineering (preferred but not required).Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities· Basic understanding of engineering and construction principles.· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and GIS (preferred).· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.· Ability to communicate effectively, follow instructions, and work both independently and in a team environment.· Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records.WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSWork is performed in both office and field environments. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during field assignments. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, stand or walk for extended periods, and perform site visits on uneven terrain. Flexible work schedule based on City and project needs.
