Key Skill AreasSelf-Advocacy & Executive Functioning: Explicitly teach scholars to understand their own IEP goals, disability profiles, and accommodation needs. Shift from "providing support" to "coaching autonomy," helping scholars develop the executive functioning skills (organization, time management, task initiation) required for a departmentalized secondary schedule.Secondary Transition Planning: Facilitate the transition process for older scholars, focusing on post-secondary interests and high school readiness. Ensure IEP goals reflect the increasing demands of abstract reasoning and independent living skills.Collaborative Inclusion: Work in a departmentalized setting to co-plan and co-serve with multiple subject-matter experts (Math, ELA, Science, History). Ensure that Project-Based Learning (PBL) and rigorous core content are accessible through high-leverage modifications without lowering the cognitive demand.Student Culture & Restorative Justice: Implement developmentally appropriate behavioral supports that prioritize restorative practices over punitive measures. Support scholars in navigating the complex social-emotional shifts of early adolescence, specifically regarding peer relationships and identity.Holistic Advisorship & GPA Tracking: Serve as the primary advocate for a dedicated small group of scholars; facilitate weekly advisory sessions focused on social-emotional development and academic goal-setting, including monitoring GPA and credits to ensure high school readiness.Data-Driven Compliance & Intervention: Regularly analyze progress monitoring data and work samples to adjust interventions. Lead the MDT/IEP process with a focus on narrowing the achievement gap in secondary-level literacy and mathematical fluency.Cross-Team Behavioral Support: Coordinate with grade-level teams to ensure consistent implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and 504 accommodations across multiple classrooms and transitions (lockers, lunch, hall moves).Core Job FunctionsDeliver Student Special Education Services (70%)Instructional StrategiesPresent subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assignedWork cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.Participate in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media.Student Growth and DevelopmentConduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.Classroom Management and OrganizationCreate classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.Manage student behavior in accordance with their IEP, maintaining compliance with Impact policy and procedure.Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.Planning, Preparation, & Casework (20%)Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.Update monitoring tools to ensure accurate evaluation of scholar progress toward goals. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.Develop meaningful relationships with families and partners as it relates to scholars on their caseload. Plan and assign the work of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion. Development (5%)Participate in team member training and development sessions to improve job-related skills.Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.Other duties as assigned*Core job responsibility percentages are estimates based on projected work for this position.Required Qualifications Must have a Bachelor’s degree in education/related field Preferred Qualifications 1+ years experience delivering rigorous and engaging instruction in a K-12 settingEnglish Language Learner EndorsementLicense/CertificationMust have or be eligible for certification by OSPI with an endorsement in Special Education (within 1-month of employment required)Must have or be eligible to obtain a food handler certificationPhysical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is active and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching throughout the day. The employee must have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment.
