Solid Rocket Motors Engineering, Principal

Basic Qualifications Bachelor's or higher degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field. 15+yrs of experience in rocket motor design, propulsion systems, or aerospace engineering is typically required. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software for rocket motor modeling. Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and structural mechanics. Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Familiarity with industry-SRM specific software and tools. A deep understanding of solid rocket motor principles, including propellant chemistry, nozzle design, ignition systems, and thrust optimization. Ability to analyze complex engineering challenges, propose solutions, and make informed design decisions. Effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with cross-functional teams, presenting design concepts, and documenting work. Insensitive Munitions Awareness: An understanding of insensitive munitions protocols and practices in the design of rocket motors, given the potential hazards involved. Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Security Clearance Willingness to relocate to a future domestic location that may include one of the following: Orlando, Troy, Huntsville, or other designated location Must be willing to travel domestically up to 50%Job DescriptionYou will be the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) Design Principal Engineer for the Missiles & Fire Control Propulsion team at Lockheed Martin. Our team creates innovative propulsion solutions that enable next generation aerospace vehicles, tackling complex technical challenges in propulsion, structural mechanics and thermodynamics.What You Will Be DoingAs the SRM Design Principal Engineer you will research, design, analyze and test solid rocket motor components and systems. You will collaborate with structural and thermal analysts, lead cross functional integration efforts and incorporate emerging technologies to deliver high performance, safe propulsion solutions. Your responsibilities will include: Designing and developing solid rocket motor components and complete motor systems that meet performance, safety and reliability goals. Interfacing with structural and thermal analysts to verify motor performance, conduct stress, vibration and thermal analyses, and ensure compliance with safety requirements. Leading or collaborating with cross functional teams (vehicle structures, avionics, systems, test) to integrate the motor into overall vehicle designs. Conducting research on emerging propulsion technologies, materials and manufacturing processes, and incorporating applicable innovations into designs. Creating and maintaining detailed design documentation, including 3 D models, drawings, specifications, bill of materials and test plans. Planning, executing and overseeing testing and evaluation of motor prototypes, analyzing test data and refining designs based on results. Managing configuration control and ensuring traceability of design changes in Lockheed Martin PLM tools. Supporting risk assessment activities, safety reviews and certification processes for motor designs.
