Engineering Internship Opportunities — Volant Energy | San Antonio, TX | Summer 2026 | PaidAbout Volant EnergyVolant Energy is an energy systems consulting and design firm working across utility-scale storage, solar, microgrids, drones, aerospace, and commercial & industrial power applications. We engineer systems for the defining energy challenge of the era — and we're growing. The RoleWe're developing Battery Engineering Development Units (EDUs) for sale to strategic customers and are looking for two motivated engineering interns to help bring them to life — one focused on mechanical enclosure design and one on embedded firmware and software. You'll work directly with the founder across the full hardware development cycle, from physical prototype to customer-ready product.Open PositionsMechanical Engineering InternDesign and iterate prototype enclosures for battery EDUs in CADDevelop detailed part models, assemblies, and engineering drawingsIncorporate thermal, structural, and manufacturability constraints into designsCollaborate on form factor requirements driven by cell form factor and electrical hardware layoutsBuild prototypes and test fixtures to validate designs and rule out interference issues3D print parts for rapid iteration and fit checks prior to sending parts or tooling for fabricationPrepare drawings and models suitable for vendor quoting and fabricationEmbedded Software Engineering InternDevelop and test firmware for battery management and power control systemsWrite embedded C/C++ code targeting microcontrollers in resource-constrained environmentsImplement and debug communication protocols including I2C, SPI, UART, and SMBusInterface with ICs such as battery fuel gauges, charge controllers, and sensorsWrite Python scripts for hardware-in-the-loop testing, automated data collection, and validation workflowsDevelop lightweight web servers and monitoring dashboards running on Raspberry Pi or industrial edge controllers such as Moxa and Advantech platformsDocument firmware architecture, register configurations, and test proceduresWhat We're Looking ForFor the Mechanical role:Currently pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering (junior or senior preferred)Hands-on CAD experience — show us your workExposure to sheet metal, machined parts, or plastic enclosure design is a plusFor the Embedded Software role:Currently pursuing a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science (junior or senior preferred)Experience writing embedded C/C++ on real hardware — show us your workPython proficiency for scripting, test automation, and web server development (Flask, FastAPI, or similar)Hands-on experience with platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, STM32, AVR, or similarFamiliarity with communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, SMBus) is a strong plusFor both roles:Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision in a fast-moving startup environmentGenuine interest in energy storage, power electronics, or embedded systemsWhat You'll GetCompetitive paid internshipReal ownership — your work will go into physical hardware shipped to customersDirect mentorship from an experienced energy systems engineerExposure to the full product development cycle from prototype to customer deliveryTo ApplyIndicate which role you're applying for in your subject line.
