SUMMARYUnder general direction, this position supervises, leads, trains, and assists multiple crews in performing skilled and semi-skilled athletic field maintenance work with minimal supervision. This role supports the planning, coordination, and daily execution of athletic field operations to ensure safe, high-quality playing conditions for all user groups. Responsibilities include field preparation, maintenance, inspections, repairs, and assisting with operational coordination, scheduling, and resource management. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises crews, technicians, utility workers, and seasonal employees; trains, evaluates, and assists supervisor in administering disciplinary actions as appropriate. Oversees daily groundskeeping, maintenance, and repair of City athletic fields and facilities, ensuring safe and playable conditions. Assists with planning and coordinating field preparation for games, practices, tournaments, and events. Supports the supervisor in scheduling work assignments, staffing needs, and prioritizing daily and weekly operations. Operates and oversees crews using specialized equipment including laser graders, robotic field painters, robotic mowers, tractors, loaders, dump trucks, seeders, fertilizer spreaders, and topdressers. Maintains, monitors, and repairs irrigation systems to ensure proper field conditions and water management. Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and other turf products in accordance with best management practices and safety standards. Trains employees on proper equipment operation, field maintenance techniques, and safety procedures; ensures compliance with all safety guidelines. Conducts routine inspections of athletic fields and facilities; identifies issues and reports conditions to supervisor with recommended solutions. Assists with athletic field setup, breakdown, and coordination tied to rentals, reservations, and programming needs. Responds to complaints, work orders, and hazardous conditions, prioritizing safety-related issues and resolving or escalating as needed. Assists in monitoring field usage, wear patterns, and maintenance practices to support operational efficiency and field longevity. Purchases or submits requests for materials, tools, and supplies; assists with tracking inventory and annual budget needs. Accounts for all City property assigned to crews and participates in inventory control. Oversees basic upkeep and maintenance of plumbing and mechanical systems at athletic facilities. Uses City systems to upload data, complete reports, document work activities, and communicate with supervisors and other departments. Completes daily job reports, inspections, and documentation of field conditions and work performed. Provides clear and concise instructions to crews and ensures quality assurance standards are met. Adjust work plans and assignments as needed to meet changing priorities, weather conditions, and operational demands. Maintains a safe working environment through adherence to occupational safety standards. Performs manual labor as needed to support crew productivity and project completion. Takes 24-hour calls on a rotating schedule and responds to emergency situations. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in athletic field maintenance, turf management, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License within one (1) year of employment. Valid Class A Texas Driver's License required. Relevant certifications in turf management, irrigation, or athletics field maintenance are preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of athletic field maintenance practices, turf management, and field preparation standards. Ability to lead, train, and supervise crews in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond to changing operational needs. Knowledge of irrigation systems, scheduling, and repair techniques. Knowledge of proper handling, application, and storage of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Ability to operate and perform minor repairs on equipment such as tractors, skid steers, loaders, and specialized turf equipment. Ability to operate computers for data entry, reporting, and communication. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, staff, other departments, and the public.
