Permanent Substitute Teacher(2026 - 2027 School Year)Coney Island Preparatory Public Charter SchoolBrooklyn, New YorkWhat is the Role?The Permanent Substitute Teacher will become an integral part of the Coney Island Prep Middle School (CIPMS) community as they step in to support scholars whose teachers are absent for a day or longer periods of time. A pillar of flexibility, they will rotate as needed through classes and duties maintaining classroom rhythm by assigning homework, managing classroom activities, and taking attendance. This individual embodies our values, models professional consistency, and provides seamless coverage across content areas and grade levels while maintaining strong relationships with scholars and staff. This is not a "coverage-only" role—our Permanent Subs are fundamental members of the CIPMS team, contributing to culture systems, advisory, student success, and operational flow.What You'll Be Asked To DoFacilitate teachers' lesson plans with fidelity in the event of a teacher absenceAssume a high level of personal responsibility for the safety, well-being, and learning of all studentsOn a daily basis, provide high-quality classroom coverage across all subjects and grade levels by teaching academically rigorous and culturally relevant assigned coverage lesson plans with fidelityCollaborate with content and grade teams to understand course routines and expectationsUse schoolwide systems such as Exit Tickets, Do Nows, and aligned data trackers when applicableCommunicate effectively with all scholars, their families, and staffCommit to a culture of consistently implementing school-wide systems, structures, and proceduresEradicate the effects of racism, poverty and other forms of oppression in our school community by making resources, opportunities, support systems, and classrooms equitable and accessible for all our stakeholdersBe proactive in creating a positive, structured, results-oriented, and fun learning environment that supports the needs of students with various abilities and experiencesParticipate in school community responsibilities such as lunch duty, dismissal and hallway duties, daily homeroom, bi-weekly advisory groups, weekly content and grade team meetings, whole-staff professional development, lesson internalization and practice, and office hours once a weekServe as an additional adult presence during community events such as the awards banquets, field trips, community meetings and, and testing seasonsEngage in coaching cycles to strengthen classroom management, culture systems, and instructional deliveryParticipate in the continuous improvement of school norms, routines, and culture infrastructureWhat You'll NeedPassion for education and a dedication to Coney Island Prep's mission, beliefs, and values and its commitment to anti-racism Steadfast belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve an opportunity to succeed in the college and career of their choiceBachelor's degree and NYS teaching certification required, Master's degree strongly preferred; we offer $2,000 towards the completion of a Master's degree and NY State certification within two years of employmentTwo years experience in a similar role desiredCultural competencies to work in low-income communities and a willingness to examine your beliefs and biases across lines of differenceCulturally responsive and age appropriate conflict resolution skillsProven organizational, oral, and written communication skills; timeliness; accuracy; consistent and regular communication; and ability to meet deadlinesSelf-reflective and open to regular feedback, with the ambition and desire to grow and develop yourself and your teamA positive, solution-oriented attitude and drive for excellenceEagerness to work collaboratively as part of a teamA strong track record of building positive relationships with families, students and staff, while demonstrating value towards diversity and inclusivityWho are we?Coney Island Prep Middle School is a public charter school in Brooklyn that serves 350 students in grades 6-8. We are a high-performing, college prep school that offers hands-on lessons, laptops for every scholar, special education services, and after-school programming. The salary for this role is $61,250.
