Principal of Applications Engineering - Transformers
Taylor Hopkinson is seeking a Principal of Applications Engineering for a manufacturer of power equipment solutions, specializing in transformers, switchgear, and complete substation systems. Serving the renewable energy, utility, and data center sectors, the organization is focused on delivering high-impact, technically differentiated solutions. This role is designed for a senior technical leader operating as a high-impact individual contributor, acting as the go-to authority across applications, customer engagement, and technical sales strategy.ResponsibilitiesAct as the senior technical authority and primary customer interface across utilities, EPCs, developers, and data center clientsLead complex, high-value bid strategy and technical solutioning, shaping win strategies and positioningReview and interpret advanced customer specifications, RFQs, and system requirements, developing optimized and competitive solutionsOwn the end-to-end technical proposal process, including system architecture, equipment configuration, and cost structuringPartner cross-functionally with engineering, product, and commercial teams to influence product roadmap and market positioningProvide executive-level technical guidance during customer engagements, presentations, and negotiationsDrive technical alignment from pre-award through post-award, ensuring successful project executionIdentify gaps in product-market fit and proactively recommend improvements based on market and customer insightsServe as an internal advisor on market trends, competitor positioning, and customer requirementsRepresent the company as a thought leader at industry events, conferences, and key customer meetingsQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred)8–15+ years of experience in application engineering, sales engineering, or technical commercial roles within transformers, switchgear, substations, or power systemsStrong expertise in grid infrastructure, utility-scale renewables, and data center power applicationsProven track record of leading complex technical sales pursuits and high-value bidsAbility to operate as a senior individual contributor with high autonomy and influence across the organizationExceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into commercial value propositionsStrong commercial acumen with experience supporting pricing, positioning, and negotiation strategyDemonstrated success working in fast-paced, high-growth or entrepreneurial environmentsAbility to manage multiple high-priority opportunities simultaneously with a strong ownership mindsetExcellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including executive-level engagementWillingness to travel up to 30% across the U.S.
