Chemical Engineer

Merom Generating Station is a 2-Unit, 1080-MW rated coal-fired power plant. The Chemical Engineer is responsible for providing support to the Operations, Maintenance and Technical departments to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a variety of power plant systems, including the Boiler House, Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD), Wastewater Treatment, Water Treatment, and Sewage Treatment Systems. The incumbent supports major station programs such as availability, thermal performance, proactive maintenance, process improvement, and station modifications, along with performing troubleshooting, diagnostics, and root cause failure analysis to identify problems and recommend appropriate solutions. Plant Systems and Supporting Equipment/Processes Coordinate operational parameters and lab analyses associated with the FGD, Boiler House, Wastewater Treatment, and Water Treatment Systems to assure overall system performance optimization. Work closely with Chem Lab, Environmental, Engineering, and Operations personnel on a regular basis in support of process optimization and in assuring all operational and environmental parameters are maintained. Ensures the Wastewater system is functioning at a high level of efficiency in accordance with all Permit obligations. Other Plant Systems/Responsibilities Interfaces with Chemical Vendors responsible for Station Chemical Programs. Develop and manage O & M budget requirements for areas of responsibilities. Actively participate in station safety and human performance improvement programs Complete tasks to support the Technical Manager in the performance of his/her responsibilities to support station goals. Water Treatment: Design and implement water treatment processes to ensure the water used in the plant meets the required quality standards. Prevent corrosion, scaling, and fouling of equipment. Emissions Control: Develop and implement technologies to control emissions of pollutants such as particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and greenhouse gases. Assist in optimizing systems like flue gas desulfurization (FGD) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce emissions. Energy Efficiency: Improve the overall energy efficiency of the thermal power plant by optimizing processes, reducing energy losses, and implementing energy-saving technologies. Ensure proper injection rates on chemical additives to maintain the appropriate overall chemistry throughout the entire system. Safety and Environmental Compliance: Ensuring that the plant operates safely and complies with environmental regulations. Risk assessment, process safety management, and implementing measures to prevent accidents and minimize environmental impact. Exchanges information with plant personnel and collaborates on joint projects Receives training and exchanges information with Manufacturers’ Representatives Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Willingness to learn from other experienced plant personnel to gain plant knowledge and seek out specific system training (Some travel necessary) Five years of power plant chemical technician preferred Chemical process treatment optimization, procedure writing, knowledge of power plant and associated equipment analytical procedures proper sampling techniques, demineralizer, and waste treatment process knowledge. Leadership and communication skills. Able to traverse in a power plant environment.
