This position may work occasional evenings and weekends, as necessary.At the heart of Denver's thriving business community, the City and County of Denver's Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) plays a vital role in ensuring public safety and consumer confidence. We manage the issuance of over 120 types of business licenses, partnering with entrepreneurs and organizations to ensure compliance and support economic growth. Our dedicated team oversees license renewals, conducts public hearings, and enforces regulations through actions such as suspensions and revocations. DLCP also collects fees for new and renewed licenses, issues security alarm permits, and serves as the local authority for administering Colorado's liquor and marijuana codes. Together, we help foster a fair, vibrant, and well-regulated business environment across the city.The Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) for the City and County of Denver is looking for a strategic thinker to serve as a Business License Inspector I and be part of the department's enforcement team. This position will initiate, process, and complete business licensing compliance inspections and complaint-based investigations which may involve assisting with disciplinary action, hearings, and supporting prosecution.The Department issues approximately 180 different business licenses and is a progressive leader on a local, national and international level. The Enforcement Team investigates the qualifications for licenses under city ordinance and determines which licenses should be issued, renewed, or suspended while ensuring consumer safety.This position has the potential to be primarily assigned to the rental team to assist with reviewing applications to ensure primary residency requirements for short-term rentals and licensing requirements for long-term rentals are met. This includes document reviews and analysis, investigatory and report writing skills, and occasional testimony to support report findings in administrative hearings.Your hard work will ensure that our department's mission of protecting the public's health, safety, and welfare by serving our community through the regulation of business is achieved through the education, inspection, and investigation of at-risk businesses.Job Duties of a Business License Inspector I may include:Inspecting businesses to ensure compliance with license requirements.Investigating and resolving complaints regarding business licenses and other compliance issues.Reinspecting violations or potential violations based on established policies and professional judgment.Working closely with City Attorney's Office to gather critical investigative material associated with complex marijuana and liquor regulations.Performing measurements of distance for new Liquor and Marijuana applicants to determine proximity restrictions.Assessing and reviewing floor plans for cannabis and liquor businesses.Representing the city and presenting testimony and historical facts in hearings and county court with regards to license violations.Enforcing appropriate licensing rules and regulations at sporting events, parades, special events within the City and County of Denver.Creating and maintaining accurate reports of each investigation.Researching applicable state statutes, city ordinances, rules and regulations as needed to suitably regulate and enforce licensing requirements.Communicating with other city agencies and departments, state regulatory agencies, and internal/external stakeholders.Processing short-term rental and residential rental property license applications that have been referred to the inspections unit to evaluate compliance with all required regulations.The ideal Business License Inspector is an experienced licensing professional who thrives in complex, highly regulated environments and brings strong judgment, attention to detail, and a customer-centered mindset.Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:Excellent demonstration of using professional discretion and judgement in decision making and communication.Ability to determine, understand, and communicate how multiple layers of governmental regulation interact.Ability to self-motivate, work independently or as part of a team.Ability to work in the field under various weather conditions.Excellent oral and written communication skills across audiences and formats including reports written for legal review, testimony given in front of judicial officials, and communications with applicants and community members regarding the status of an application or investigation.Please note this position requires a valid driver's license as you will be using city owned vehicles to report to inspections, complaints.Please note this position requires occasional night or weekend work.Required Minimum Qualifications:Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.Experience Requirement: Two (2) years of public contact experience explaining policies, procedures, statutes, rules, and/or regulations and relating them to specific problems.Education/Experience Equivalency Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.Licensure/Certification Requirement: This position requires driving.
