Job Title: SAP BDC / SAP Datasphere Solution Architect Location: Emeryville, CA (Hybrid)Hire type: Contract Job description:Role SummaryWe are seeking a highly experienced SAP BDC (Business Data Cloud) / SAP Datasphere Solution Architect to lead the modernization and migration of the existing SAP HANA Sidecar platform to SAP BDC/Datasphere. The architect will serve as the primary onsite technical and business liaison, working closely with Grocery Outlet business teams, SAP stakeholders, application owners, integration teams, and project leadership.The role will be responsible for defining the target architecture, governing migration activities, ensuring performance and scalability requirements are met, and enabling seamless integration with Talend and downstream applications while minimizing business disruption. The solution must support operational reporting, API-based consumption, high concurrency workloads, data governance, security, and future analytical capabilities.Key ResponsibilitiesArchitecture & Solution LeadershipOwn end-to-end architecture for SAP HANA Sidecar migration to SAP BDC/Datasphere.Design target-state architecture covering:SAP S/4HANASAP CARSAP Datasphere / SAP BDCTalend integration layerDownstream portals and applicationsEstablish data ingestion, harmonization, transformation, and consumption layers.Define architecture standards, naming conventions, and design principles.Conduct architecture reviews and solution governance sessions.Lead technical workshops with business and IT stakeholders.Datasphere / SAP BDC DesignDesign replication architecture using Datasphere Replication Flows.Lead development strategy for:SQL ViewsAnalytical ModelsTransformation FlowsSQL Script ViewsTask ChainsEstablish semantic and consumption models.Define reusable frameworks and accelerators for migration.Migration LeadershipLead migration of:Calculation ViewsSQL ViewsMaterialized ViewsStored ProceduresTable FunctionsDefine migration waves and cutover strategies.Ensure business-rule parity between source and target platforms.Govern release and deployment activities across Dev, QA, and Production environments.Integration ArchitectureArchitect integration patterns using:JDBC/ODBCODataAPIsDatabricks Delta SharingOversee Talend integration redesign and optimization.Ensure minimal impact on consuming applications.Define API and service-layer best practices.Performance & ScalabilityDefine performance benchmarking framework.Address critical pain points:Sub-second API response expectationsHigh concurrency access patternsResource utilization optimizationData freshness requirementsDrive performance tuning, workload management, and capacity planning.Establish SAP BDC Capacity Unit (CU) sizing strategy and optimization recommendations.Data Governance & SecurityDefine enterprise governance framework covering:Data lineageAuditingData maskingAccess controlsSecurity standardsEnsure compliance with enterprise security policies.Recommend archival, retention, and hot/cold storage strategies.Stakeholder ManagementAct as primary onsite solution authority.Present architecture and status updates to executive leadership.Facilitate business requirement workshops.Coordinate across SAP, Talend, application, infrastructure, and business teams.Support proposal reviews, governance reviews, and steering committee meetings.Required QualificationsExperience12+ years of SAP architecture and data platform experience.5+ years in SAP Datasphere/SAP Data Warehouse Cloud architecture.Multiple SAP HANA to Datasphere migration programs completed.Strong experience in retail, grocery, supply chain, or distribution environments.Proven leadership of large-scale enterprise data transformation initiatives.Technical ExpertiseSAP Business Data Cloud (BDC)SAP DatasphereSAP HANA Native ModelingSAP S/4HANASAP CARSAP SLTSQLScriptData Modeling and Semantic Layer DesignTalend Integration PlatformAPI-led Integration ArchitectureOData ServicesJDBC/ODBC ConnectivityDatabricks IntegrationPerformance Tuning and Capacity PlanningLeadership SkillsExecutive communication skills.Strong consulting and stakeholder management experience.Solution governance and architecture review board participation.Team leadership across onshore and offshore delivery teams.Preferred CertificationsSAP Certified Application Associate – SAP Datasphere.SAP HANA Certification.SAP BTP Certifications.TOGAF Certification.SAP Business Data Cloud related certifications.
