Job Title: Senior Data Engineer (Power BI)Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor — 10-Month Engagement with Strong Likelihood of ExtensionLocation: Remote — United StatesSchedule: Full-time (40 hours per week)Industry: Education & Workforce TrainingWork Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United StatesAbout the RoleKopius is seeking a Senior Data Engineer with strong Power BI expertise to join our Solutions Team on a 10-month engagement — with strong likelihood of extension — supporting a leading U.S. education and workforce training organization. This role focuses on designing, building, and delivering data solutions and reporting infrastructure that support the client's analytics and business intelligence needs.This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who operates independently, brings strong engineering judgment, and can ramp up quickly on a new client environment. You will design and maintain data pipelines, build and optimize Power BI dashboards, and partner directly with client stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable analytical solutions.Given the fast start date, the ideal candidate is ready to hit the ground running — comfortable engaging directly with client teams, absorbing context quickly, and delivering value from week one.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, and maintain data pipelines and analytical solutions that support the client's business intelligence and reporting needsDevelop, optimize, and deliver interactive Power BI dashboards and reports for business stakeholdersBuild and maintain analytical data models that enable scalable reporting and business insightsWrite and optimize advanced SQL queries to support reporting and analyticsEnsure data accuracy, consistency, and quality across all reporting solutionsCollaborate directly with client stakeholders to gather requirements, translate them into analytical solutions, and communicate insights clearlyImplement data security best practices, including Row-Level Security (RLS) and Column-Level Security (CLS) where applicableOptimize Power BI performance — report design, DAX calculations, and data model efficiencySupport version control and delivery discipline using Git and modern DevOps practicesBasic QualificationsStrong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage directly with client stakeholders and translate business needs into technical solutionsClient-facing consultative posture — comfortable gathering requirements, guiding conversations, and advising on reporting strategySelf-directed and proactive — able to hit the ground running with minimal ramp and operate independently in a client environmentHighly organized with strong attention to detail and follow-through disciplineExcellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to issue resolutionStrong sense of accountability and ownership over deliverables, data accuracy, and client outcomesThrives in collaborative team environments and contributes to shared goalsTechnical RequirementsSenior-level experience as a Data Engineer with a strong focus on business intelligence and reportingDeep, hands-on expertise with Power BI — dashboards, DAX, data modeling, and report optimizationAdvanced SQL skills, including complex queries, performance tuning, and stored proceduresHands-on experience designing and implementing ETL / ELT pipelinesStrong data modeling and analytics fundamentalsExperience implementing data security practices — Row-Level Security (RLS), Column-Level Security (CLS)Proficiency with Git and modern source control workflowsCurrently set up as an independent contractor in the U.S. (EIN or SSN, ability to invoice, manage own taxes and insurance)Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)Nice to have: Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or Synapse AnalyticsNice to have: Familiarity with the Microsoft/Azure data ecosystemNice to have: Experience in education, workforce training, or student information systemsNice to have: Prior experience in IT services, consulting, or professional services environmentsEngagement DetailsEngagement type: 1099 Independent ContractorDuration: 10-month engagement with strong likelihood of extension based on performance and project needsSchedule: Full-time, 40 hours per weekCompensation: $75 - $95 per hourStart: ImmediateNote: As an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own taxes, insurance, benefits, and equipment.
