Physician - Psychiatrist with EDRP
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements that may apply. Applicants who are pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. License: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (Approved residencies include those accredited by ACGME or AOA, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States that the local Medical Staff Executive Committee determines provides appropriate professional training.) Residents currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency training program who otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. They are not considered independent practitioners or privileged providers; rather, they perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: ABPN Board Certified/Board Eligible in Psychiatry. Comfortable/experienced in providing mental health care through telehealth modalities. Experience as a member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team providing a full range of mental-health services. Demonstrates a high level of psychiatric practice using evidence-based medicine principles involving patients with complex illnesses. Buprenorphine certification and treatment experience. Physical Requirements: The position may require potentially long periods of continued light lifting under 15 pounds, pulling hand-over-hand for up to 1 hour, use of fingers, both hands required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, hearing (aid may be permitted), and emotional and mental stability. Duties This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until October 9, 2026, or until positions are filled. The psychiatrist will undertake a spectrum of clinical duties that include, but are not limited to, providing general outpatient psychiatric treatment to veterans with a range of mental-health diagnoses, conducting diagnostic evaluation, medication management, and monitoring clinical response to treatment. Duties also include diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessment, crisis intervention, overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders, and ensuring practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, and clinical practice guidelines. The psychiatrist will work effectively and collegially within a multi-disciplinary team comprising psychologists, social workers, licensed practitioner counselors, nurses, and peer support specialists. Participation in team meetings, treatment-planning conferences, and multidisciplinary collaboration is required. The psychiatrist will order diagnostic tests, receive consultations, discriminate between normal and abnormal findings, and make appropriate treatment decisions. Participation in the teaching and supervision of residents and medical students is expected. Clinical care will be provided by face-to-face encounters or via VA Video Connect Modality.
