PARK SECURITY OFFICER I (SR-13)

DescriptionNOTE: SHIFTS MAY VARY. MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS, INCLUDING WEEKENDS, HOLIDAYS AND NIGHTS.Patrols public parks and beaches to preserve order, prevent vandalism, and enforce park ordinances, rules and regulations; provides information relating to park facilities, recreational programs, commercial ocean recreation activities, and other points of interest; and performs other related duties as required.Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis class differs from the Park Security Officer II in that the Park Security Officer I patrols public parks and beaches to enforce park rules, regulations, and ordinances and provides information relating to park facilities, recreational programs, and commercial ocean recreation activities as its primary assignment; whereas the Park Security Officer II provides direct supervision to lower level park security officers, in addition to patrolling public parks and beaches to enforce park rules, regulations, and ordinances and to provide a wide variety of information about park and recreation facilities, programs, and activities to the public.Examples of DutiesThe following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.Patrols parks and beaches to preserve order and prevent vandalism;Interprets and enforces park ordinances, rules and regulations, including those related to commercial ocean recreation activities; issues citations for violations and assists police officers in arresting violators;Assists in the parks education program by providing information on park facilities, recreational programs, and commercial ocean recreation activities as well as safety requirements, rules for use and points of interest;Inspects recreation buildings and facilities to insure proper use and to prevent vandalism;Reports hazardous conditions in buildings, facilities, and equipment;Checks permits for camping, special events, commercial ocean recreation activities, and other park uses;Administers first aid to park users as necessary;Prepares comprehensive reports of all investigations, arrests, and of daily patrol activities;Testifies at trials concerning contested violations of park ordinances, including those contested violations related to commercial ocean recreation activities;May perform general maintenance duties such as replacing light bulbs and fuses or making minor repairs to water fountains and faucets;May set up or remove folding tables and chairs, barricades, traffic cones, or similar objects;Assists park maintenance employees when necessary.Minimum Qualification RequirementsTraining and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience in the enforcement of security regulations or in the protection of property.License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).Registration Requirement: Applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010.Knowledge of: principles and techniques of law enforcement relating to the protection and security of property; methods of maintaining law and order.Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; learn, explain, and enforce laws, rules, and regulations relating to park, ocean, and other recreational facilities and uses; prepare written reports; use common hand tools; deal tactfully and effectively with the public.Health And Physical ConditionPersons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.Physical Effort Grouping: LightSpecial Working Conditions: shift, evening, weekend, and holiday work as required.Supplemental InformationSkills AssessmentQualified applicants will be required to take an online assessment.
